ive seen people just wrap their existing tie rod with dom wall tubing.. just gotta get the right size for your tie rod to stuff into it.. just as cheap as a zj tie rod from a junk yard, and twice as strong

BARKDOG67 Yeah I'm going to do the zj tie rod here in a couple weeks they are way more heavy duty than are stock ones are.

some of the upgrades in the budget junkyard upgrades are pretty cool.. when i get around to it im gonna find the alternator that they swap into the tjs.. i cant remember how much bigger than stock it is tho.. but i remember reading that forum a few months back

Maybe because its a question about Junk yard stuff. But Answers such as what size axle's per tire size and whatnot would get used. 4Jeepn As far as the easy swap, a TJ dana 44 would be a bolt in job. Just make sure the gears match your front axle.

The XJ 44, can be added, but you will need to weld on all the brackets, much like you would for the 8.8 swap.

The ZJ 44 is an odd ball 44, nothing matches and lockers are harder to find for it, along with just about anything else. I think you can get a spool for it, but you have to use a corvette part number.

You also could go with Rodeo/passport rear 44, but again weld on brackets, and the lug pattern is far different

Wagoneer 44's. Plenty beefy, but different lug pattern, gears, weld on brackets and some years where off center for the rear diff.

Rubi 44's direct swap, just make sure to get the locker wires' as well.

As for the stock 30 and 44 they can run 35's.

I ran 60's on my last TJ.. so not much help for the junkyard..mine where built with Visa.

back to the topic...unfortunately, i don't have many answers. the dana 44 the came on the tj's are a very strong axle, imo. the tj dana 44's came w/ 4.10 gears, which will handle 35" tires. if you are planning on putting 35's on there you might want to regear the axles to a 4.56's or 4.88's. as far as upgrades that come out of other vehicles, i've seen threads about people taking the electric cooling fan out of a ford taurus and installing it in their jeeps. it is cheaper than buying a brand new flex-i-lite electric cooling fan.
the dana 44 i swapped in my jeep came with factory 3.73s.. the rubis came with the 4.10s.. fyi

from what ive read, my hp30/d44 combo will hold 35s with no problem.. im only running 33s right now.. but ill go bigger before too long

Part of the reason that this is not getting answers is that it is a hypothetical question, and I know that I am not going to go to the trouble to do hypothetical research to make sure my answers are right when the information is not going to get used anyway.

There are a ton of junkyard swaps, and I believe that the WMS-WMS measurement on your TJ is 63", but most swaps are wider than that.

I am kinda new on this topic, but I know that it will not bolt right in to a TJ. This is due to the fact that the YJ has leaf springs which match the rear of the cherokees and wagoneers.

Joshpfeffer Will the Dana 44 out of older Cherokees and Wagoneers fit in a TJ? I've seen it written that they'll go straight into a YJ, but with the varying suspensions, will they work in a TJ as well? What would be required to do something like this?

Junkyard Swaps

Hey guys, I was just skimming a few articles here and started wondering about junkyard swaps you've all done and what all was/would be required. I know JP Magazine did an article a few months back similar to this, but as I recall, it wasn't exactly complete. So what I'm specifically interested in is axle/diff swaps in TJs. What axles people have mounted in their TJs to beef everything up, or to handle the pressures put on by larger tires. I've read a lot on Dana 44 swaps, seen a few 60 swaps, and then heard arguments for swapping in an 8.8 instead because of the affordability. Could we get a few arguments for each and WHY? What length would we be looking for on the diffs out of older 4WDs? And outside of just diff and axle swaps, has anyone been able to successfully upgrade with other parts that maybe aren't so obvious out of other cars? I think I've read a few articles on salvaging a few Cherokee parts to beef up the TJs? Please, lay on all the info you have here. Or link to somewhere that will maybe?
