|MI JeepSkate||I have a bear of a time trying to get up to 70 and keeping it there here in hilly southeastern michigan. i average 17 on 32 BFG KM's with 3.73's JK2dr on my 20 mile highway/city commute. however my brother and i swapped jeeps for a day so he could test out some issues i have on mine, and over 100 miles round trip he averaged 18.9 all highway. hope that helps|

I'm averaging 20 mpg with mine, thats 70 % in town driving. On the highway I run 70 or 75, running the RPM's up does not seem like it hurts the engine. Most modern designs are built to handle higher RPM's. That said I have a different engine than you. I would still believe running at a higher engine RPM would not be all that bad for the engine, just the gas mileage...driving a brick is the most appropriate comment previously made.

Mine is a 2013 with 4:10 ratio. It is a different animal from yours because of the 3.6 and 5 speed automatic.
In the mountains it just loafed along at 75 mph. I felt very safe in it at that speed and I averaged 19.1 on my trip. Mine is new and still tight so it will even get better.
On yours, I'm not sure what trans, or gear ratio that you are running. Some of the other members may give you a better recommendation as to what gear ratio to run, based on what transmission you have. The RPM that you are running is not going to hurt the 3.8 engine, but also would not be that fuel efficient.

This sounds odd. You shouldn't be running that high of an RPM with a stock setup. Check this chart for RPMs at 70mph:

2013 Unlimited freedom edition with auto, 3.73 gears. All stock.
Second tank of gas, 60% highway,40% City
Averaged 18.4 mpg. Less than 800 miles on Jeep.
Very impressed with the mileage. Keeping it around 70 mph seems best.
The wind can really push it around.
Nothing like driving a brick!

2012 3.73 auto, no problem to drive 80mph+, just feel it's pushing hard to do so. I drive an almost half of its weight Miata, so not too surprised to feel that.
3K+ rpm shouldn't be a problem, the engine is designed to do more than that.
However, see noticeable drop in mpg shown in the dashboard if I go above 70mph.
20mpg or little more if I keep under 70mpg. I blame the ethanol gas in California.
When I'm not in a hurry, I don't mind driving behind another SUV or cargo truck to save some money, that did keep me going for a long time once when I was low in gas.

|thomslife||2011 Sport JKU 6 speed 3:73 gears here. I drove across country last August at 70 to 80 mph. Averaged about 20 mpg over the whole trip. Very impressed with the gas mileage on my Jeep.|

|cobraj59||Hear alot about hood flap.. ran 65-75 in my new jk for while and hood didnt budge ever. Hope it stays that way. Are you guys in warmer places? Thinking the rubber is softer in the heat than in NewEngland cold!|

|CampThree1982||I just pulled a flat front enclosed motorcycle trailer (1500 lbs gross) 1000 miles round trip from Charlotte to Daytona with my 2013 stock Rubicon 2 door, 6 speed. Averaged 16.6 at 65 mph.|

|Lamp||The speed limit out here is 75 on the interstate, and I have no problem doing that in my '11 6-speed Sport. Around here, because of the elevation changes, I get around 18-19 mpg. When I lived in South Carolina and had a flat grade, I could get 21-22 mpg at highway speeds, never worrying about the hood. Your RPM's seem high. Mine runs at about 2300 at 75mph in 6th gear.|

|Don26||I have the exact same vehicle. People drive pretty fast here on the highways in Chicago. Generally I do not like going over 70 over the same concern. Mostly because the hood starts flapping up and down when I get up to the higher speeds. Just ordered new Daystar catches after getting some advise on here so that should end that problem. Personally I would not go above 75, these things are great in snow and mud (and sand, my personal favorite) but not exactly aerodynamic!|

|MudRunner||I run mine at around 75 on the highway comfortably for hours on end to get to wheeling locations on the weekends. No issues, runs fine. I do sit at a lower rpm than you since I'm running larger tires, but I have no problems. Average 15 MPG highway.|

Gas Mileage at Highway Speeds
I have a 2010 Sport that is stock for right now and I just started at a new job about 45 minutes up Interstate 95 from me in Virginia and I drive the jeep about once a week up there mostly because of the gas mileage. Ever since I bought the jeep it is so surprising to me on how little power it has going on the highway. Most times I don't go above 70mph because running 2700 to 3000 rpms does not seem very healthy for the engine or my wallet and I see people on here posting all the time of going 75 to 90 mph... Is it just me but I cannot imagine running the thing comfortably above round 70?
