WICruiser Could be timing or it could be an intake leak that is making it run very lean. Check all your vacuum lines and check the base ignition timing.

Scott-CJ8 This may be a silly question... but is the timing set correctly?
Another culprit could be bad gas.
(Sounds like the poor Jeep was abused by previous owner)

Help please!!

Hey Everyone. I'm a newbie here and am in need of help. I have a 1994 Wrangler and am experiencing a problem that I can't figure out. It has the 2.5L and about 4 months ago I started getting some hesitation and slight backfire in the throttle body. It would only happen while accelerating in 2nd and 3rd gear. Not long after, It blew the timing jumping out 4 teeth and blew the muffler to pieces. Having all new timing gearing replaced and a new muffler installed it still acted up. I just got it back from a mechanic who did a pressure check and found out some bad news.

There were 3 bent push rods, stuck valves and the head was cracked. I now have new: Head, Valves, Push rods (with all new gaskets), thermostat housing, water pump, timing chain and gears, plugs (champions gaped to .035), wires, cap, rotor, throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, new belt, new pulleys and vacuum lines and new brakes.

Side note, it does have a cold air intake.

It is STILL hesitating in 2nd and 3rd and backfiring through the throttle body. It strains getting up to 50mph on the highway and all around has horsepower loss. If I feather the gas pedal, I can get it to go without backfiring. It usually does this the most when it's cold.

PLEASE someone help!! It is a 1994 but has the 1993 motor and tranny in it.
