are u planning to have your frame gray? because you shouldn't paint over the zinc paint. The zinc in the paint is a less noble metal than the steel frame so the salt attacks the zinc paint first thereby sparing your metal frame.

|Don26||Here in Chicago it is a constant problem. I rinse it off once a week (unless it is too cold, do not want a rolling block of ice). I do not bother washing everytime as it is dirty again the next day anyway but I try to keep as much salt off as possible and I give all the hinges a shot of WD40 every month or so. I undercoated as soon as I bought it and touch up with 3M rubberized undercoating (just did it yesterday). As far as paint chips go, I keep a little bottle of touch up on hand and cover them immediately. If you have a little rust, a small piece of scotchbrite will take it off and then touch up. I would not bother with primer or clearcoat unless we are talking about large areas.|

We do salt here, before is snows, after it snows,
and sometime just in case it snows...
NO rust issues, but I always keep the
road grime flushed off of the body and
out of the frame rails and the rock guards,
Limestone is just as bad in the summer,
it'll eat right through steel...

|clayps||I just purchased mine in december, it had very little rust when I bought it but even after one winter the paint is starting to peel on the differentials and some weld spots are rusting on the frame. I will likely get it oiled underneath every fall. That will give it a good layer to protect it from the salt. If you do that, do not pressure wash the underneath as that will rinse the oil off! Other than that I will get under it in the spring with a steel brush and some rust paint. Its about all you can do.|

My father in law put a sprinkler head on the end of an 8ft pvc pipe attached to a short piece of old garden hose. Turns the hose on and runs the sprinkler up and down the undercarriage after a run on salty roads at the end of the day.
Drains the water and disconnects and rolls up the hose and puts it in the garage. Takes about 5 min.
As for the high lift jack. Store it inside the or only mount it in the winter if you're wheeling

Keeping the salt and road crud washed off is the key. Like somebody else posted, wash once a week. I can't wash mine myself up here either when it's very cold. I go to the car wash and get the undercarriage wash, soap and liquid wax. It ain't cheap, but it's worth it.
Doing other preventative things probably helps, but I think the best and easiest way is fresh water to wash off the salt water.

|BManz||I used the Amsoil HDMP on my 2011 GC and no rust after 2 full Chicago winters. Sprayed my used 2012 JK when I bought it (it hadn't seen a snow yet when I got it) and have been through mud & snow --- no rust yet and the HDMP is still stuck to both, a thin film. Highly recommended and easy to apply. One $10 spray can easily does a Wrangler and 3/4 of a can covered my GC|

To prevent paint chips on hood how about a clear bra? While don't own a jeep yet, shopping my current car is a 2003 and I put a clear bra on when I bought and there are no chips what so ever.
PS: Live in CT lots of sand on the road.

|jyp||For the Chips, I am still unsure. For sure, I have to sand down the rust and apply the MOPAR paint. But some people suggest applying a primer first, some people suggest applying a clearcoat overtop. I even heard someone strongly suggesting applying epoxy on the metal before painting.|

OK, so here is my game plan for the UNDERCARRIAGE
1. Wash away the Jeep with an acid solvant to bring it back to the bare metal. (Anybody has a good product suggestion for this? If not I use the cheap stuff I bought at Canadian Tire.)
2. Paint every part with rust-proofing paint (is Rustoleum good?). A few coats.
3. Apply the AMSOIL wax-like metal protector that jceo suggested above.
As far as I've gathered, this should give me the best of all worlds, maximum rust removal (don't know how successful that stage will be), long-term paint protection, seasonal coat protection.
Unless anyone suggests I do otherwise, I think that's the approach I will take for the undercarriage.

I just cleaned off the last layer of winter grime today. I was pretty good over the winter but I still see some surface rust forming on the doors.
It looks like its just the clearcoat right now so I am going to clean up the painted surfaces as soon as the rain stops today and then for my fenders (I have the ace flatties) I am going to pull them and sand down a few spots and bedline them again.
I was really shocked to see this on a 2012 JKU and then I remembered I am in Ontario Canada, there is soo much salt used here it is ridiculous. Now I need to clean up whats formed and try harder next winter to wash more often.
