tn-yj Yeah the NV3550 would be your best bet because it has a nice overdrive for highway driving and a low first gear for weekend crawling

WRANGLERKID19029 thanks, i'll look into getting the nv3550, because that seems the most practical, because i still have to drive back and forth to school every day...

jpdocdave the ax5 won't bolt right up anyway to a 4.0, and you don't want it to.

the ax15 is probably easier seeing as you can buy it right out of a yj. the nv3550 is a good one also, and it still came out of wranglers.

or be like me, go crazy old school, t 18, sm465, sm420....these are only if you wanna get crazy wheeling, not as much fun on the street.

tn-yj Thats for the NV3500. There Is also a NV3550 that came behind the 4.0 in alot of the new production Jeeps. Liberties, Wranglers and Cherokees maybe.

tn-yj The ax-5 is well known for losing 5th gear frequently. I think it was originally supposed to be a four speed and they stuck fifth on there.

As far as the NV3500 here are some applications according to Wikipedia:

1993-1998 Chevrolet & GMC CK with Vortec 4300
1999–2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2500LD
1999–2006 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2500LD
1993-2003 GM S (S10 etc) trucks with 4.3 liter Vortec 4300
1994-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 [4]
1994-1995 Dodge Ram 2500 Light Duty
1994-???? Dodge Dakota V8

WRANGLERKID19029 what do you mean by "ticking time bomb", and how hard is it to find that other trans. that you said was good???

tn-yj you don't want the ax-5 behind anything. The ax-5 wasnt designed to handle that much engine. Its basically a ticking time bomb if you ask me. You need the ax-15 atleast. I would look for the NV3550 if you can lay hands on one.

87YJWrangler Well you could just as easy buy a whole wiring harness and ECU from a 4.0

buckshot500 Not an easy swap, from what I've read. If you can get the trans & transfer case that's on the 4.0L now, it might go a little easier. Then you'd only have the rest of the stuff to sort out. Fuel delivery, exhaust, wiring/computer, emissions, & drive shafts to name a few.

I know this is a dumb question, but if i were to swap my 2.5l for a 4.0l could i still use the trans. From my 2.5l or would i have to get a different trans for the 4.0l?????advice
