If they are identical 4cyl transmissions it wouldn't matter which one I swapped with would it? My buddy is going to be the one doing most of the mechanical work, as I am not too mechanically inclined. I have a general idea about how to work on the jeep but he will assist me with all the stuff I'm not too aware of.
The one off the Cherokee will have to have tailhousing clocked or swapped out with old one so TC will mount properly

kruger Well, in my limited experience, the 6 cyl AX15 tranny is the better one. The AX5 in the 4 cyl is not known for its strength. BUT, I am assuming that you are talking about a manual transmission. If you are talking auto trannys, then I really cant help you on that one. But, if you are talking manual, then you need to know that you will have to make changes to your transfer case the mate up the 6 cyl tranny. Different input shafts on the 4 and 6 cyl transfer cases. And, I believe that there is an extra transmission mount for the 6 cyl tranny.

Which transmission to use?

I have a 1990 4 cylinder wrangler and the transmission is starting to go. I have two options as to replacements. A transmission that was pulled from a 6 cylinder cherokee or a transmission from a 1993 4 cylinder wranger. Both are in good condition but a friend said the one from the cherokee might give better MPG. Im looking to get input from people on each of the transmission replacement options. the pros and cons of each. should i go with the 6 cylinder or the 4 cylinder transmission?
