AmericaOverland I am west Houston, just outside the beltway!

Today was my lucky day, clearing a financing hurdle. Now, I just need to find the Jeep within my price range and pay cash out the door (to the dealer it seems).

It looks like Jeeps come like this:

2-door - X, Sahara, and Rubicon
4-door (called the Unlimited) - X, Sahara, and Rubicon

It sounds like to me that the X is the base model, the one I want. I really don't want the more advanced features of the Sahara like the stereo system or video stuff, or the off-road capability of the Rubi. My use is mainly in the city, pulling a light travel trailer, and greenlaning on rough roads, but no rock-crawling or butte-climbing . I don't want to tear up my Jeep, explain why I have dents in my roll bar, and would rather other off-roading buyers be able to buy a Rubi rather than hogging it and not using it for what it's designed for. That's like refusing to sell a CJ7 just sitting behind the house, and buyers want to save it before it rusts into the ground. Oh, and comfort be damned; I have a Scout II.

I'm reading an older brochure online and comparing the features.

Any suggestions would be awesome. I'm going through the forum in the next several days or weeks to learn as much as I can.

danieldlg_13 What a tease!!! No more rain!

deathphoenix99 Every three months I switch between Work and College, my college is up in Michigan, so I'll be there from July till the end of September.

I play on the dunes as well since I didn't know of any good places to ride locally. I've heard of General Sams, but I want more of a trail and scenic type of thing, that way I can't damage the Jeep, and I wouldn't mind having a place to take my truck, it's 2wd, but has a locker in it and would be a good trail vehicle.

danieldlg_13 Awe, I didn't know about that! All this time I've been using the edges of the sand dunes in Galveston.

danieldlg_13 Where are you heading off to?
06-21-2011 10:27 AM
deathphoenix99 I didn't use mine today, but they are Rain X'd. I'm glad it rained a little bit, wish we'd get more!

Just checked out Down South Offroad, I wish I'd known about that sooner! This is my last weekend down here, so I doubt I'll be able to make it. But I'll be back in October.

danieldlg_13 This is probably not a big deal, but I actually had to use my windshield wipers today! And not because of bug splatter, dust or pollen, but because of rain!!!

Griffmanjoe If you like mud, then try Down South Offroad and ATV Park. It's just off old Hwy 90 (Beaumont Hwy) outside of Crosby. I follows the San Jac river north of old 90 up for about two miles or so (just south of Lake Houston).

Just be prepared for lots of four wheelers, and unfortunately lots of dust right now.

twxsby Another one in Cypress here. Love it! Great schools, great neighbors, but not enough places to wheel! Just bought my second Jeep today! Cant wait to get it, suppose to be here Monday or Tuesday. Thanks to this website, I saved a couple thousand dollars!

Mom2one I am in the Richmond / Sugar Land area so if you see a shiny new jeep driving around that area that will probably be me! I just got it a week or so ago.

Anyplace close by for a newbie to wheeling and jeeps to go play in the dirt?

danieldlg_13 I've been all over Houston, and I have to say that I see a greater concentration of Wranglers in the South/Southeast side. Mainly anywhere South of 45S and Beltway 8. Webster, La Porte, League City, Alvin, Friendswood.. and all the way to Texas City. I wonder why that is? Maybe because it is closer to the water? I see Wranglers everywhere but not quite like those areas. For example, I drive down Bay Area Blvd and Nasa Rd 1 and I'll pass up at least 5 Wranglers, driving in the opposite direction, in a 2 mile stretch just to go to work!

Griffmanjoe I live in League City also and am currently looking for a used Jeep TJ. I've been visiting Select Jeeps a few times looking for the right Jeep. They don't seem to be that overpriced but I'm also looking elsewhere.

Hostile JEEP T.J Hey I live 59 north of Houston in the kingwood area, we need to have more local runs and stuff! There's nothing better than having a platoon of jeeps haulin down the freeway headin out to go wheelin and having every passing vehicle starring in awe, wishing that was them! I mean come on motorcycle guys do it why can't jeep owners, would really like to set something up! I use to go to spring creek all the time but it's now been shut down and I've been waiting to find out where he plans on opening up a new offroad park!

Oh yeah

About Select-seems to be ripoff.
Ask prices from one guy there, get different price from another. Used parts they have are priced almost as new, but are beat up and worn out. They have some nice Jeeps on the lot, but check elsewhere. I beat their prices and the odometer readings last year by quite a lot by keeping an eye on Craigslist Houston (and watching out for the Nigerian scammers).

Texas? Come on down

Don't know if you are here yet, but I live in Texas City on the coast next door to Galveston. Good place to live, and getting better all the time. It used to stink from the chemical plants here, but they are seldom noticed. Every few years something blows up, but for the most part you wouldn't know unless someone told you there had been a problem, We have beaches, fishing, and one of the lowest tax rates in thea area due to the chemical plants taking up the slack and wheelin in some local mud bogs and sandpits. I am an ex-officer from here and they welcome reserve officers. No problems from hurricanes here due to the extensive dike system surrounding the city and the huge rainwater pumps-no flooding at all. Just a suggestion. Many new homes and subdivisions being constructed on the water at Moses Lake here. 25 minutes to Houston, 15 minutes to Galveston, 20 minutes to Clear Lake/Nasa area. Just a thought if you are coming this way.

I got the same feeling about select jeeps. WAYYY Overpriced!!!
They have been pricing their jeeps pretty decently lately. Last time I was there the condition of the jeeps was okay, I think they have improved over the last year or so.

Which is why locally everyone hates them and keeps clear, they know better.

Thaskateguy I live in the Houston/Heights. Inside the 610 Loop. About two miles from Down town central. nice older Neighborhood. It is a "Dry" area, so doesn't attract a lot of noisy drunks. ---But no matter where ya live here, it's still Houston. Hot, sticky, and flat, with no nice water to cool off in. --But there are Jobs, and that's the bottom line for me. I need to live where I can work, no matter where that is.

G_Spot I too just moved from NYC. I drove my Jeep down here and live in The Woodlands
