|Jerry Bransford||Connect the hook to a another Jeep, tree saver strap around a telephone pole, etc. and winch your Jeep to it after pulling the parking brake up several clicks to create the required load. This works fine on flat ground. Pull all the line out except for the first layer to do this and guide the line in with your gloved hand... pay attention and be careful of course.|

|Radioman||That would work depending on how steep the driveway is. It is important to wind the cable on the spool with a good amount of tension. I have also hooked up to another vehicle and winched up to it with the e brake on slightly. Make sure the cable is wound on neatly.|

|Maestro||I'm about to use mine for the first time. I don't have any 500 lb weights laying around. What if I pulled my jeep up a slight hill like my driveway for the first spool up?|

And for what it's worth, if you really do want a good quality winch, you can find a good used Warn winch for cheap if you look around. I paid $400 for my XD9000.

|sakicnut||I've had no problems with my Badland so far, but i also take care of it. When I finished installing it, i respooled it so that it wouldn't tangle up within itself. After every use, i respool it. Proper winch maintenance is the key to keeping any winch lasting longer, no matter if it is a Warn or Harbor Freight.|

The only time I've seen a winch bind up like that was when it was not properly wound back in after usage. When you ran the cable out to test it, did you follow the proper procedure for rewinding to prevent the cable from tangling? From what I've seen, any cable winch will blow up and tangle like that when wound up without a load on it. Should have a weight hanging on the cable or other resistance on it while winding back in.
It should have came with instructions to properly wind it back up, what do they say?
Should say things like;
12. Neat, tight spooling avoids cable binding, which is caused when a load is applied and the cable is pinched. If this happens, alternately power the winch in and out. Do not attempt to work a bound cable under load; free by hand.
15. Following each use, a cable must be wound onto the drum under a load of at least 500 lbs. This will slightly tension and stretch the new cable and create a tight cable wrap around the drum. Failure to do so may result in cable damage and reduced cable life.
^ I copied those from a badlands instructions manual. Did you have 500 pounds of resistance on the cable when pulling it back in? If you did, then you need to return the winch. If you did not, then you created the problem.
Not slammin' ya brother, just want to make sure everyone knows how to operate them to save troubles in the future and save some headaches.

|GoldenSahara00||And any product doesn't need to be 100% made in the USA to say "made in the USA" so keep that in mind. I do believe Warn is the top of the line. There are a few underdogs who do make solid winches however. Do your research. I for one will throw in my ENGO plug here, as I have used and abused their winches on my rigs and several others with no issues.|

|baker3||I know their gears are manufactured in oregon but you have to realize that most of their motors will be imported from overseas like many other companies. Warn obviously did their homework and found a reliable source. Chances of finding a 100% American made winch are pretty slim but warn is known for reliability. Its your choice. E-mail warn and ask them. They will tell you which one has more american components.|

I just got a reply back from my Warn contact... I just learned their standard VR8000 that comes with wire rope is made in China but the rest of them are made in the U.S.
Here is the “low down” on the VR winches.
87845 – VR8000 – made in China
86255 – VR10000 – made in USA
86260 – VR12000 – made in USA
87835 – VR8000-s (synthetic rope) – made in USA
87840 – VR10000-s (synthetic rope) made in USA"

|KaiserJeep||That's correct, the VR series claim to fame is it is a Warn design built in China. They tried the same thing about a decade ago by making winches in Mexico, and the original "Tabor" winch line disappeared, then returned about 3 years agio with new designs and a new Chinese manufacturer.|

|baker3||Im running RC's 9500lb winch and have not had a single issue. Ya its a chinese import but it has worked every single time with no disappointment on my part. Plus with all the hate on chinese import winches, warn imports their motors for the m8000 from china yet are still notoriously reliable. Alot people have also have had good luck with smittybilt winches too.|

|Jerry Bransford||Just save up a little longer & get a Warn so you won't have to worry about it. Yes I know you said you don't have the $$$ for a Warn but look what happened with your HFT. Not to mention that Warn has a series of winches that are not much more expensive than the Chinese imports.|

Okay so heres the deal. I bought a badlands 12,000 lbs winch from harbor freight. the first time i used it, worked GREAT...that first time being that time it was JUST put on and i didn't need it. Well today, i went riding and needed to use it otherwise i COULDN'T get out. It took me nearly an HOUR to get enough rope out and i was maybe 10 feet from the tree i was anchoring to. I tried to turn the handle to disengage and there was no way to pull it out by hand. Even using the remote, the wire was so tangled up and looping that, like said, it took nearly an hour for the little bit of rope. So i get home and hook up to the back of my moms jeep, disengage the "clutch" to try and pull it out by using the jeep and basically wound up dragging my mom the wire was tightly wound up The winch was bought in february so needless to say...REFUND. So ya'll gimme your suggestions on winches. I dont have money for a warn so anything besides that really, lemme hear it!
