oOoYTSEJAMoOo Thanks for all of your documentation and help. My conclusion is that there is no fucking way that I will pay money for a product, to only have to fix it once I receive it. Aries is officially out. It is ridiculous that they could continue to ship their crap.

Thanks you from preventing me from getting this! My search continues....maybe I'll be visiting a metal shop soon and just make my own...

More Answers to FAQs Aries Security Deck (v. Tuffy)

THANKS: Huge thanks to all the Forum members. As a new owner of a 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, it's been tremendously helpful.

Having spent innumerable hours trying to figure out which deck to get and why, here's my payback...

SIZE OF CARGO AREA: I struggled with whether to get the Tuffy or the Aries security deck. I went with the Aries because I'd like to lock things across the full width of the cargo area once in a while and don't want to take out the deck to do it since that would defeat the point of the deck in the first place.

Once installed, the Aries holds golf clubs underneath.

SHIPPING: The packing is ridiculous. Mine came with the connection tabs turned down like the others depicted elsewhere. See pic. Banged them with a sledge back to straight with no problem, but annoying. Other pieces were also dinged up and required their edges and corners to be hammered back to flat. But the original bends damaged the powwder coating. I'm using Rust-O-Leum "Protective Enamel Hammered Black Spray Paint" to retore the powder coating in its place:

Also, two of the silver machine screws that attached the silver latch to the deck were missing and floating around in the box. (See pic. The use of these screws is a design flaw anyway because you can pull them with a Phillips screwdriver and gain access to the latch, and then the whole trunk. An allen button bolt with only flat washers - no lock washer, so they'll spin if you try to turn them - and a hex bolt underneath would be better because you'd have to have access to both to remove them. I'm replacing mine with these.)

CONNECTION TO TUB: Yes, the Aries installs on the top of the lip using the same holes used for the hardtop. Haven't put the hardtop back on yet, but the best thing for waterproofiness would be to use another piece of weather stripping on the tub beyond where the deck extends to in order to mimic the thickness of the deck.

BOLTS TO TUB: The hex bolts that come with the Aries deck are a joke. Anybody with a Leatherman could pull the deck in no time. You can use the same T40 bolts to attach it to the tub. Changing to Security Torx or other more obscure bolt heads would also aid security, as does using button heads.

REMOVAL: If you want to remove the piece behind the back seats to allow something large to pass through, you're looking at nine hex bolts to disconnect from the inside. Ratchet socket wrenches are quick, but it's still a bit of a pain and you've got a huge piece of metal to deal with. An alternative would be to cut a cutout in the back center of the back piece, rivet it or bolt it with a small piano hinge, and then install a sliding bolt latch from the inside so you'd have the equivalent of a metal security door that can be swung open from the inside.

INSTALL ON DOOR LATCH: Like others have reported, the bracket that attaches on the driver's side to the door latch is misshapen for the task and will ding and take paint off the edge of your tailgate door. (Frustrating on my new beautiful paint. But got over it the first time I went in the mud and took out other chunks elsehwere.) So... once installed close the tailgate slowly and carefully to see how much the bracket needs to be "reshaped" by banging the heck out of it with a sledge. (See Pic.)

LOCKING MECHANISM / WATER-PROOFINESS: Unlike the Tuffy, the Aries does not lock into the lip on the tailgate. It does have a well made trim piece that attaches just about everywhere there's a gap and adds some waterpoofiness to the gap between the deck and the tailgate. But the deck basically locks down with the <1/4" rods that are engaged and disengaged with the latch which go into holes in tabs under the sides next to the rear edge of the deck. They're relatively secure, BUT the tolerances on the deck are so poor that if you had a Sawz-All or hack saw or something like it and a alittle time, you could easily cut through the rods because there's a big gap between the folding center section and the side sections. (Pic.) An improvement would be for a redesign of the deck that engages with the tailgate door when closed (like the Tuffy) or an add on for this. Although, based upon tolerances, I'm not sure I'd trust that it'd fit.

TOLERANCES: The spaces between sections are too big for a top rating. The pic shows the difference in the distance between the two center sections and the side piece on the driver's side. The two center sections should be able to be lined up perfectly because they are connected with a piano hinge. They're not even close. They're off by probably 3/8" or more. Again, reduction of water-proofiness. THE LIBERAL TOLERANCES ARE THE REASON THAT EVERYONE SAYS TO KEEP ALL THE BOLTS LOOSE UNTIL EVERYTHING IS LINED UP, AND THEN TIGHTEN AS THE LAST THING YOU DO.

There are also uneven gaps at the front and back of the opening for the sport bar passing through the deck that the rubber trim incompletely and unevenly fills.

There are also gaps between the rear of the tub and the rear edges of the side sections. These also kill waterproofiness, but the gap on the driver side is helpful because it is just big enough to allow the wiper tube and electrical for the rear windshield wiper to pass through without drilling or removal.

TIE DOWNS: They're a joke. They're too small for anything but the smallest bungee cord or light duty tie-down strap hook. (Pic) You're not putting anything burly enough to hold a load under these miniscule tabs.

SUMMARY: Once you get over the packing and tolerances being terrible and a series of design flaws that you'd do better if you were cutting the metal and mass-producing the product, the deck is pretty bomber tough. It looks clean on and is definitely a deterrent when installed. Although there were no installation instructions in the box, and lots of typos in the ones I printed from their website, the installation instructions were easy to follow and it only took an hour and a half or so to actually do the install. The Jeep Backbone is a more refined product, and is at least 50% more than the Aries or the Tuffy: Backbone - Backbone

The Tuffy is Waterproofier and easier to remove, but smaller and won't allow you to carry golf clubs.

The Aries is what I'd wind up with if I had my own welding equipment and plenty of time to fabricate things.

TurboRabbit I'm not sure about the top you have but wanted to give others feed back on the tuffy with factory soft top. The tuffy security deck lid will not fully extend or open in up right position with the soft top in closed (covering) position. Pretty much a given it's not going to work at all with soft top in open (down) position. The factory soft top rear bar (bar that has the rear window attached to it) sits directly on the beveled part of the deck lid so you really can't get your hands on it any more to "roll it" when taking the top down.

If the bar you are wondering about is the same as the factory rear window bar then on both products you should be find although I can only speak about the tuffy because it's the one I'm using now. The aries unit part that meets up the rear tail gate seem the same in design.

TurboRabbit Update: Attempted to install the damaged unit I received from Aries to have something in place then I was going to replace the damaged side panels with a replacement order. Once I spent 3 hours trying to get the aries unit to line up, I gave up. The center door wasn't even centered correctly and bolt holes on left panel did not line up with my Jeep, right hand side was fine.

Ordered the Tuffy security deck lid... cost me a bit more money but it didn't come in damaged and I was able to install it painlessly. Only thing negative I can say about it (aries has same issue) is that if someone has tools they are going to get into your Jeep. These products will only slow someone down and stop the opportunity theft of your property in the rear.

Another note on the aries... I can't prove it but the only think preventing someone from getting into the back are rods that are 1/8" in diameter. It appeared to be very easy to bend but again I can't prove it. IF someone is dead set on getting the aries unit DON'T buy the steel version of it... I didn't take into account how heavy the door/gate section would be, it's heavier than what I would have wanted to deal with.

oletennessean anyone know if the aries or tuffy will work with an offroad heros fastback top? what concerns me is the bar that lays overtop the tailgate when closed to keep the rear window down

I have a problem with "Aries" not wanting to assist me on getting parts replaced, why does the company I purchase from need to get involved if I plainly see it was shipped from Aries. If the product is damaged due to the company I purchase from I would feel a bit different, example - item purchase was poorly packed before shipping out. Also Need to keep in mind that the boxes are "ARIES" meaning it had no outer box providing additional protection. Which would have made no difference because the damage was caused by things sliding around on the inside.

The main thing I'm learning about this purchase is that I don't want to give Aries any more of my money.

burton09 I did have to contact the company I bought it from, who then contacted aries. Aries will not deal with you directly even tho, like you said, it shipped straight from them. Still was able to get a refund and buy a tuffy.

Aries made you cut them up? wow. I called Aries yesterday and they told me that I would have to contact the company I bought them from. Yet they shipped directly from Aries.

burton09 Turbo, if you aren't happy with it call them. I got a refund on mine and they didn't require it to be sent back. Just had to cut it up and send them pictures. For the price these should be a lot better made.

Received my aries today and I'm disappointed

I received mine today and it will be a few days before I have the chance to install it but I'm disappointed already. I bought the steel on because I wanted to be able to use magnet mounts for flash light and wanted to see if I can rig up something as well for my AR.

The company I purchased from had it shipped directly from aries to me and boy did the boxes look rough... no wonder why I had so many bent pieces. The bent the panel that goes behind the seats (very fix able), chipped paint/finish on the top panel, side trim panels near rear gate are really bent with paint/finish coming completely off. Crappy sheet metal screws into framing where hinges are. Also notice that the flat sheet metal panels have very few wield points so it appears to me it would be easy to start prying to get into the back.

I purchased because I liked the idea where it folds back to an open area in the back. I regret getting it now... even though I like the looks of it. I didn't purchase from amazon so I'm afraid it would be at my cost to return. I'll try to post some pictures soon.

LiveAndLearn Jeepbackbone.com is where I got my cover. It's so clean looking with no bolts showing and works with my regular soft top and the trektop nx

TRAUMAhead So I received my replacement and it only had the pieces that go around the roll bar plus hardware. Received another replacement for that one and it was the exact same thing. For some reason Aries has the same part # for the entire cargo lid and another part that only includes half the parts. Looks like I'm going with a Tuffy.

Olboymike Same thing happened to me. I called amazon and a replacement product was shipped w no issues. I did have some issue lining up, but worked that out. Lined the entire box w hushmat to eliminate rattles. Slight modification needed (cut two holes) in order to make work w hardtop. Love the look and the product. Amazon customer service was great.

TRAUMAhead Finally got my Aries cargo lid. First thing I checked was one of the brackets that a couple people received bent and mine's bent , not going to bother with Aries and go through Amazon. Here's Doctorsti's picture showing the problem, the tab is suppose to be straight:

The pain part was that the lid mounts to the tub same place the HT does. The HT sits on top of the aries. Getting all the holes ligned up was a PITA since the inserts on the jeep move around.
^^^^This. Replacing my hard top has gone from 20 minutes to an hour since I put the Aries in. IMO, it was never designed for hard top users. I may just get frustrated enough to replace it at some point.

If you never run a hardtop, and they got the other probems fixed, you'll probably like it. I liked the way it looks and it was solid. The latching mechanism also didn't want to lign up worth a crap and on my first one (the steel one) it was held in place with sheet metal screws, a couple of which were stripped and anybody with a phillips screwdriver could take out. The second one (aluminum) was rivetted on but still didn't lign up very good.

Yeah, hoping they fixed the problems with the hardware and bent brackets. I run no doors/safari top 6+ months out of the year, Trektop NX the rest of the time. I just needed something that was metal and water resistant, and I like how the Aries covers the entire trunk section vs the gaps by the wheel wells with the Tuffy. What part is a pain switching from soft to hard top? I doubt I'm ever going to remove the cargo lid once it's installed.

The first aries I got was all steel and was terrible. They sent me a replacement that was aluminum and while it was lighter and better than the first it still had issues and got sent back. Hope you like it. I would have liked it a lot more if I ran topless all the time but switching from hard to soft top with the aries is a pain. Plan on getting longer bolts to mount to tub if you run a hardtop. Also, one of the reasons it got sent back is the holes that were punched where it bolts to the tub were off. I had to cut them out to be able to get bolts thru. And then they kept putting me off when I called them about it and they said they would ship me new "correctly stamped" parts. Maybe they have fixed that issue by now.

With the tuffy yes you can take the back panel out and leave the deck in. With the aries, no.
With the aries front half folded back it would depend on your dog. I have a 90 pound GS and that wouldn't have worked.
Go with the tuffy, you'll be happier with it. To many problems with the aries like somebody else also posted with things not being straight and holes being off. Plus the aries is a major PITA to remove to go from hard to soft top.

for the tuffy no.. the top panel secures to the back..

JDaPP For the aries when the top is flipped over in half (so half closed half open) how much space is there? I like the lid function I just need to know if there is enough room for the dog to stick her head out the top with half open.

TRAUMAhead Reviews I've read seem to be 50/50 on the Aries. Ordered one from Amazon, was suppose to get it on the 10th, now they're saying I "should" get it before the 17th, still no update on tracking.

Aftahour Forget this product. I finally saw this and was not impressed. Like the review above very cheap. Get the new tuffy security trunk for the jku. Part number 299.

"This is poor quality covered in nice powder coating. All the hinge screws were stripped and some were missing. The two doors that fold were so offset it would not close. I had to remove the hinge, re-align and rivet it together as it should have been in the first place. Holes that were stamped/cut were left jagged. I have had it 6 weeks and is starting to rust."

panthermark Depending on the size of the amp, there are two EXCELLENT places to mount them (at least on the newer JK's) that are more secure and won't get wet.

(1.) That little space below the steering wheel, and (2.)where the current amp is located (stack it).

Of course if you have a larger 4 or 5 channel amp, those spots won't work.

Moabite sshhhhhh...don't tell anyone...my sub amp is under the passenger seat. I think you could mount it in the Tuffy though. I'm amazed at how everything "just fits" in my setup. The Trailgater table comes within a fraction of an inch of the modified sub...and just fits underneath the top rear of the Tuffy. My freezer has about 2 inches to spare between the front seat and the Tuffy box. It's like it was meant to be.

woansleftpeg Hmm..... thanks. I think I'm probably going to have to just buy all this stuff, then see how I can best fit it together. I'm really concerned about mounting the amp under a seat, but maybe I'm just being unnecessarily paranoid.

Mounting it on the sub side would be really tight. It's 15" from the front panel to the plastic housing near the power outlet...and 19" to where the actual sub wall sticks out. If you spaced it out a little and mounted it to the side panel, it might work. It's exactly 8" from the Tuffy "filler bracket" to the top of the power outlet housing. It would easily fit on the driver's side...but again, part of the amp would be out over the plastic panel at the rear.

woansleftpeg I'm thinking this is going to be my next mod, and am erring towards the Tuffy because ease of taking it out to form a larger cargo area is quite important. Question for those who have the Tuffy - I have the factory subwoofer installed, and I want to mount an amp inside the Tuffy box to keep it secure. Is there room on the side panel next to the sub for an 18" x 8" unit to be fixed to it? I want to avoid mounting it to the back panel if possible as it would make it harder to remove. If the right side wouldn't work, how about the left?
