rrich One sure way to break a Rubicon locker is to strain it before it's seated properly.

When you "engage" it, the dash light flashes until the locker is fully engaged. Best way - engage it "before" you need it and wait a second till it quits flashing.
Sometimes the dogs don't match up, so it keeps on flashing. Simply roll forward or backwards slightly, or turn the front wheels a little till it stays on solid.

In most cases I've seen them break, was when the guy turned them on while a wheel was spinning.
But yes, they are weaker than other types.
I can post a picture of one that grenaded if you want.

Yes, Rubicon lockers run on 8-10 psi and ARB lockers require 80-90 psi.

dwdrums801 for all the guys that broke the rear locker what size tires were you running and how did it break? Hill climb? during the engaging and disengaging part? do you still need to run air lines and a new compressor if you upgrade it to an arB? Thanks

Any locker will break if you put enough stress on it. Mine just happened to be the only thing OEM left on or in my axle and it's what broke. I knew it would happen some day but I was hoping I could make it last another year or so. Oh well it's just money!

Your friend just doesn't know much about them then. The front Rubicon locker seems to be up to wheeling but the rear locker doesn't hold up as well. That they are known to break if pushed very hard is becoming more and more widely known.

Scout I broke my rear Rubi locker a few weeks ago. I knew it was the weak point in my axle and it finally gave up the ghost.

Now if I could just get the spool installed!

ygohome if you break a rear rubicon locker i would take that oportunity to upgrade to an arb or a detroit locker or if its trail only rig then a spool. putting a front rubi locker in the rear is stronger than the rear locker that came bundled with the liited slip but its not a whole lot stronger. Huck went that route and a few wheeling trips later he broke it again. ALLOY USA used to sell a rear ARB locker combo with 35 spline chromolly shafts. they might still be available, or save up for a spidertrax 9 or d60

X2 on everything said, especially that the Rubicon's rear locker that hasn't held up as well as Jeep expected.

dwdrums801 Also correct me if I'm wrong, but there's no c clip in the Dana 44 therefor if something breaks I wont loose the wheel and axle shaft?

Rubi lockers and stock dana44s

OK so now that I'm a Rubicon owner I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them before I start dumping all my money into it.

My question is are the Rubicon lockers as good and reliable as all the aftermarket ones. Besides them taking long to engage which I can live with are they going to be able to handle 35"s well? What are the weak links of the stock Dana 44s?
