|Jerry Bransford||A dropped Pitman arm will cause bump steer on TJ suspensions unless there is also a dropped upper track bar mount which isn't commonly installed. Reinstalling the OE Pitman arm should completely cure your bump steer.|

i have bad bump steer. Its so bad that siting in the drive way if i push down on the front bumper the steering wheel turns one way when i let off or even pull up on the front bumper it turns the other way. The wheel turns a total of 4-6". So i am planing to try the stock pit-man arm.
Has anyone ever noticed this with theirs before they swapped the pit-man back to the stock?

Any time the steering box end of the drag link is moved in relation to the steering knuckles (where the tie rods are connected) it changes the effective length of the tie rod (drag link and LH tie rod, which as an assembly make up the total tie rod)
The inverted "Y" angles change.

|Patrick H||Moving the end of the drag linkup also moves it's connection point at the tie rod up, which shortens the tie rod's overall length. Look at the pic, and picture what happens when the end of the drag link is raised. It will pull the front tires together.|

If that were the case, adjusting the drag link length to center the steering wheel would change the toe-in.

|All Terrain JK||You can rent the pitman arm puller at autozone. Do not turn the steering wheel while PA is disconnected or you can break your clock spring.|

|Patrick H||Replacing the drop pitman arm with a stock arm will raise the end of the drag link (obviously) which will increase toe in. So yes, you'll need to set the toe, and then center the steering wheel.|

|Jerry Bransford||If your alignment is ok now, replacing the Pitman arm won't affect anything but the steering wheel's position. Once the OE Pitman arm is in place, simply turn the short adjustment link on the drag link connected to the Pitman arm until the steering wheel is straight again. You'll need to adjust that link to make the drag link a bit longer which is done by rotating the drag bar's adjustment link downward in front.|

thanks for the quick response guys! there is a special pitman arm remover that I will need to get to get it off, right? I should be able to just rent one from like autozone or somewhere? and then, correct me if i am wrong, but I should get an alignment after i get the OE arm back on there?
and since i don't have the old stock pitman arm, do most places charge about the same for one?

That Pitman arm has a HUGE drop on it and is the cause of your bump steer. Replace it with the OE Pitman arm and life will be good again.
That dropped Pitman arm installed now would only be appropriate when that other monstrosity, the dropped track bar bracket in your last photo, is installed. Neither should be installed, both are bad news. Keep the track bar installed as it is in your #2 photo.

Bump steer issue?
I have a 4" fabtech lift on 33's and i am getting alot of bump steer. I have tried to search the forums but i am getting alot of conflicting statements. Currently, it looks like there is a drop pitman arm installed on it, but i dont see a trackbar drop bracket installed, however i do have one sitting around, i believe. would it be better to install the trackbar drop since i dont have a stock pitman arm. or should i just wait and buy a stock pitman arm and trash the drop bracket and dpa? thanks in advance for any advice.

also, I have a picture of the trackbar drop that I have, just want to make sure that this is actually the part. :
a year or so ago I put on the piece on the right, )i am not sure what the part on the left is for) and was then told that the drop trackbar bracket was throwing everything off and needed to be removed, so it was. I had a suspended license at the time this was being done so i dont recall what difference it made but my dad ended up taking it off. I really want to fix this bump steer issue, I am just not sure what needs to be done.
