o3jeff What and were is the the other part(receiver) of the key system? I ask because the other day I noticed that on the bottom of my steering column I have a round black thing velcroed to the bottom of it with a wire that runs under the dash somewhere. Will look this weekend to see were the wire goes.

Is this part of the Sentry system or is my Jeep bugged?

booger it's not about the key, it depends on your Jeep having the security system. my TJ came with one gray key, but doesn't have the security system so i got a black one cut and use it all the time.

when you turn your ign. on, look for the yellow idiot light that says SECURITY. if it's there, you'll need to program a gray key. if you don't have the light, chances are good you only need to get the black key.

TeeJay Pretty sure that's the process. You can do it yourself. It's not hard and it requires two keys. Google it if you don't believe me. My room mate had to buy a second key for his and was able to program 2 more on his own.

So the "two keys and do it yourself" isn't real.
Buying a "pre-programmed" key from the internet is a scam.

The dealer's DRB reader programs the computer to accept the new key. That's why they charge for the service.

IF you put a key in the ignition that hasn't been programmed into the PCM, the computer "locks up" the ignition and fuel for about 15 minutes, even though you realize the mistake and put the right key in. Nothing will make it start before the time's up.

It works, I've inadvertently tried the wrong key a few times just moving one into the shop. Ya gotta let it time out.
I'll have to check my book, but if im not mistaken the manuel tells you how to program a new key if you already have two. I believe you have to put one key in turn it to the on position, take it out, put the second key in, turn to the on position, then take that out, then put the new one in, turn to the on position for 5 seconds, and your done.

You don't even need to get one online. You can right to any place that makes kets and get one for a few dollars cut and ready to go.

TeeJay Black key can be cut anywhere. The grey ones have the security option.

booger have fun paying $60 for a $1 part..
04-24-2009 08:42 PM
Nicholson I talked to the dealer today, they want $60 for the key, $10 to cut it, and $30 to program it, after which I'll have two keys and won't need their assistance to program it. I found a website called iKeyless that sells the keys for $18, a much better deal, but I think I'll get it cut on a normal key first and see if it works, just in case. Thanks for all the help.

booger you need to find out if you have the stock security system or not. my TJ came with the security style key, but does not have the stock security system.

don't pay over $5 for a key if you don't have the security.

$70, that's cheap. I ended up paying $106 and that was the cheapest after calling 4 dealers.

TeeJay They can, but you need 2 keys.

meyers On our 09 Dodge Journey, the electronic keys can be programmed by the car. It basically copies the key codes to the new key by doing some process of inserting and turning the new key. I thought that was cool. Wish our Jeeps could do that.
04-24-2009 04:09 AM
TeeJay If your key is black you don't have the sentury-key option. If it's gray and the sides are convex and thick then you do and you'll need the dealer to make one. The process is easy once you have 2 keys, but only 9 total can be programed to an ecu, so don't get all excited and treat your jeep like it works at kinkos.

Jeep Electronic Keys

I Just bought a 2000 TJ and it only came with one key. I was going to just go get it copied until I looked at my manual and discovered that the key has a security chip in it, so any copied key without the chip would only open the doors, and wouldn't start the engine. Is the dealer the only place to get a new key?... Any clue on cost? Or has anyone figured out a work around to this? I suppose it is a good security feature... Anyone have any suggestions on good security systems?
