GoldenSahara00 I just put mine on the tailgate. No issues. i wouldn't go any larger. You have issues if the tire isn't tight against the tire stops or whatever the technical name is. Make sure it's securely fastened to your tailgate. I will probably be removing it soon for the wheeling season and carry it in the back for the trails. I don't think the kind of wheeling I do will be friendly to that large of a tire on the back. That said, for a DD I think it is fine if mounted correctly. Mine just fit on with a little bit of modification to stock.

When in doubt, call McGuyver hehehe I wish I could help out more but maybe contact a local fabrication company and get a quote on building one (which sometimes ends up being cheaper then buying a whole kit) unless you have the right tool for a DIY project.

Not being a smartass, but any larger then stock tire will cause issues "eventually" on the tailgate. That being said and that you dont want a bumper mount, maybe place the spare in the tub and lock it down? (assuming you dont have a rear seat being in place.)

myquite The po had a 33" on the tailgate and it warped the tailgate and tore all the welds from the right rear corner. I've had quite a bit of repairs to do. Put it on the bumper where it belongs.

lee indy mounted to the tail gate is the worst place for it. more than a few videos of it dragging and tacoing the tail gate. another reason why i wouldnt do the terraflex mount either. ive drug mine a few times. zero damage. get a swing out that connects to the gate too.

joebarlow65 I've seen a few in the past but they always ended up failing at the most inopportune time. the sheet metal of the tail gate just isnt stout enough to handle the weight of something that big bouncing around in the trail. If you really want to do it though, the best way would be to drill all the way through your tail gate, sleeve the holes, and put a plate on both inside and outside of it. Even then all that stress will be transferred to your tailgate hinges and their respective hardware.

DIY TJ Oversized tire carrier- tailgate

Has anyone fabed up a design to modify the stock carrier to fit a 33? I don't want a swing out or it attached to my bumper. I'd like to keep it tight to the tailgate, fit a 33 and just bolted to the tailgate.. I saw one for JK but I didn't know if anyone made a design specifically for a TJ or if they happend to have specs on it also!

Thanks, photos and comments well appreciated
