|Jaik YJ||I agree, it sounds like someone swapped out your carb and possible the engine. It does sound like your jeep has been nuttered. If your not sure what that means, just search John Nutter. Welcome to the world of the early YJ, you will spend just as much time wrenching as you will wheeling.|

check to see if your jeep has had the nutter bypass done to it. you can make them run alot better, and cleaner, with this mod, and lose all the vacuum crap cluttering the engine bay. The carter is crap, until the needles are drilled and you bypass the ecu nutter style. Or switch it to a MC2100 ford carb, search that on ebay, 200 for a conversion kit....the carbs supplied are freshly built.

|Covrace||someone swapped my carb and then did a REALLY poor job at replacing the vacuum lines where they belong. For example, the large hose that is suppost to run from the charcoal canister to the vent on the carb was instead, routed to the rear pcv valve which was "hollowed out". they cut it open and removed the guts.|

|dwnbylaw||I have a lot of issue with my 87, some one yanked all the vacuum lines off mine. So now Im trying to redo someone screw up..heres a couple of pics of my carb. My 4.2 has an aluminum valve cover but no stamped numbers.|

might have a whole cj motor if the oil filter is for cj, the carb sounds cj.
i wouldn't worry about the valve cover, at least its not plastic....some are.
welcome to the forum
down thd road you might wanna end the carbed 4.2 nightmare and swap the whole motor out, or do a 4.0 head conversion with all the fuel injection and computer.

I believe what you have there is a 2 Barrel Carter BBD for 1981-84 Jeeps with the 258 / 4.2 Engine (Non-Feedback model without the Feedback Valve or Stepper Motor)
Looks like this model didn't fit your Jeep from the factory. So somewhere along the line it's been replaced.

hi, yes there is a tag on the carb. It's located on one of the top screws, is kinda pink and has the following numbers: top line= 6150SA. Second line is 2144 followed by a larger "08"

Newbie with 1987 YJ questions
Hey gang, fantastic site!
I just purchased a 1987 YJ. it has the 4.2L, auto trans, and a NP231 transfer case.
Apparently 1987, being the first year, means things can get tricky when trying to find parts. I ran the VIN and everything checks out. BUT......
My engine has an aluminum valve cover that looks stock, Yet, another 1987 a mile from my house(with an earlier VIN) has a stamped steel Valve cover. Whose right??
When changing my oil, The oil filter given to me by my local autoparts store would not fit. I checked all oil filters to 1999 with no help......UNTIL I tried a 1985-86 CJ which spun on perfectly. HUH???? There is however, a sticker on the radiator mount telling me the thread size of the oil filter is 20 x 1.5.
half the books and websites I've checked out told me I have a NP231 and half said I should have a NP207. I climbed underneith, cleaned the tag and sure enough, it's a NP231.
Last issue concerns the carb, again, I'm running the 4.2L straight 6. All the carbs I've seen have the Feedback motor on the rear, with a large wiring harness going to it. Yet, mine does not. My carb is cleaner than the rest of the engine, and judging on how screwed up the vaccuum lines were when I got it, Someone has been here before, messing around. The carb is still a Carter and looks like the other 1987 previously mentioned, but is missing the feedback motor, and one vent on the passenger side of the carb body. Any idea what carb I have????
