SRTie4k I've always been partial to the e46 330ci's myself, especially those with the appearance and M Sport package. They are damned sexy, and not nearly as impractical as an e46 M3 (although I'd kill to own one someday). I would say if the car in question is clean, go for it.

Wanna bet?

I had a 2002 BMW 325xi (manual) that other than one problem with the cluster controller unit at 10,000 miles was absolutely bullet proof. We drove it to about 99,000 miles doing just regular maintenance and it never hiccuped on us at all.

There are a few electrical things (like the brake wear sensors) that you have to buy for some of the maintenance items, and a few tools you may need, but for regular maintenance, they are not hard to work on. It's when you get into electrical stuff (sensors, iDrive, etc) that it can get hairy. There are a LOT of places to get BMW parts online like RockAuto.

But I was able to get filters, wiper blades, brake rotors, etc at cost from my local dealer because I struck up a rapport with the service guys. I did ditch the OEM brake pads and went with PBR/Axxis brake pads (a LOT less brake dust).

I loved that 325xi, but would have loved the 3.0 engine vs the 2.5 with lower gear ratios.

EdJonesJeeper As someone who doesn't want to spend a single dollar on my DD, I bought a Camry.

socal-jk I'm a BMW tech by trade. E46 330 isn't a bad car. Have it checked by a dealer before you buy. They are rock solid, safe, fun to drive. Figure 18mpg though for just about anything but open highway. Parts are cheap (relative to BMW) and nothing too hard to do.

The only major things that are an issue are the cooling system. Its the weak point. If the motors overheat badly, they warp the head, deck and weaken all the headbolt threads to where you have to timesert the block (if its not warped). The other is the trunk floor tears by the rear subframe mounts. Have it looked at by a dealer.

325's are notorious for dumping the trans after 100k miles when the torque converter seizes in the front pump. Also a SULEV 325 has a $6k gas tank.... yup..... that's what I said. Its completely sealed. Fuel pump, sending unit, neck, if any of it fails whole tank has to be replaced.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

bcls99 I've got a BMW as the other car. X5. Third BMW we've had. First was a 325i. Loved that thing. Then a 318i. Took a break went with a Lexus SUV then a small Mercedes C280 before my Jeep. Love the Jeep best of all.

I agree with the e30. One of the best they ever made.

Malebolgia I would say keep the Jeep. If you want solid info go find a good BMW forum(think of the wealth of knowledge you find here about Jeeps). Try Bimmerforums.com | The Ultimate BMW ForumBimmerforums.com | The Ultimate BMW Forum or Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

I have a friend who is a BMW junkie and he uses those two all the time.

zimi117 True it is a luxury but I've always been really into the sleek look and ride.

whetstone I couldn't afford good beer in college, much less a BMW...

Chrispy My first car was a 1971 BMW 2002...The greatest car I've ever had. Maybe the best, drove that car HARD, got me thru 2 1/2 yeas of high school and a 1 in college, almost 200k when the body just got too rusted....loved that car.

Malebolgia Go hunt down an 84 318i. They are bullet proof, easy to work on, good on gas, and are still fun to drive.

Raiderfan001 I just know that BMWs are expensive to maintain. I'd stick with a Honda/Nissan/Toyota for a commuter

BMW with jeep??

I'm a mechanical engineer with an internship looking to buy a new commuting car because I cant sell my 98' TJ. I'm a junior in college so looking to buy something a little more then your average civic. I'm thinking about a 2002 BMW 330ci auto. Found one fully loaded and never seen snow in my price range. For Chicago thats great haha. I know insurance will be quite more but I just wonder what the forum thinks. I have learned alot about automobiles since I owned my jeep and worked on it. Really helped to fuel my desire for automotive engineering being a mechanical engineer.

Appreciate any thoughts thanks
