I just very recently picked up a 97 exploder. Runs and drives, came with an extra misc axle for $380. Planning for the 8.8 swap as well. Glad to have found this thread.
Is anything else used from explorers? Front axle? Ebrake cables? It'd be silly beefing up the rear and not the front.

OK so i found another 8.8. This time its still in the mercury mountaineer. It is the 3L73. It has disk brakes. The diff cover looks like it has not been taken off. Does not look to be leaky. The guy want 150$ for it.
I am thinking about the Artec truss kit as far as brackets goes that is.
What else do i need to look into?

|SteelBlue44||Im in the middle of my 8.8 build now. I got lucky a buddy of mine told me he would weld in my Artec truss and brackets for a 6 pack|

|mikemounlio||I like the tack idea. I know a good welder also. I guess it comes down to what is there at the time. Ill have to rice a full weld up tho.|

|Kssig1||I recently did the 8.8 swap using the Artec kit. It made it so easy to find the correct mounting points. I found a good 8.8 out of a 2001 Explorer with tru-trac and 3.73 gears. The guy at the yard agreed to just trade me my old TJ rear end for the 8.8 and ZJ brake cables straight across. TJ rear ends are going for way more in my area than the 8.8 even though my D35 had open diff and 3.07 gears. We both got a great deal. I agree with just tacking your mounts in place and taking to a shop to get welded if you are not comfortable with your ability. After reading all these forums and gettting all my parts together it was way easier than I thought it would be. Cutting the old brackets off the biggest pain for me.|

|mikemounlio||I would really like a simple bolt in kit. ALl i want to do is run 35" at some point. So i would think a d44 could handle 35". If not i could beef up the 44 a bit.|

|Jad4271||oh...if your worried about the welding part of it just tack all the brackets where they need to be and bring it to a good welder and have them burn them in.|

|Jad4271||I bought a nine inch from a 79 Bronco, had it shortened to 61 inches, added a Tru Trak diff, new bearings, seals etc, and brackets for my TJ for around $1200. Why not go that route? All you need on top of that is axles and you can sometimes have the oem ones trimmed down or you need to get Currie axles. The drum brakes that came with the housing work great and are a huge improvement over the stock TJ.|

I have made up my mind to just go with Dana 44 when the time comes. I am good at welding but have never had to trust my life with my welds. So to do the 8.8 swap would in the end be as much as a bolt in 44. Local jeep place said 1000$ for a bolt in d44 with matching gears (front or rear). So 2000$ in total and i would have my stock parts for spare.
Is that a good deal?

8.8 rear found need help now
I am not ready to do the swap by far. The guy might trade me a ford 8.8 with 3.73 limited slip and a 3.55. Thats all i know at this point.
The items i might trade are junk to me. Should i do the trade (ill know more about the 8.8's soon and will update)?
