Wrong lug nuts?

I went to a local tire store yesterday to have my tire balance rechecked. This same store had balanced them a month or so ago and I have a vibration at highway speed. I have a 98 TJ with Pacer D window steelies that the PO had installed. I was told by the manager that unless I change my lug nuts, they would not be able to work on my Jeep in the future. He said that you cannot use OEM lug nuts with aftermarket wheels. The wheels have a conical taper, and the lug nut is conical as well. I do not understand what the problem is. Can anyone enlighten me? Is the manager confused?
