JFjeld I've got a Garmin nUVI 50 that my wife bought me, but for offroad trails I use the BackCountry Navigator app on my Android Smartphone. $10. I download the Garmin (.gpx) trail files from TrailDamage.com. The app shows all of your stats, allows you to cache the surrounding topo/aerial maps so you're not dependent on a cell signal, and uses your phone's existing GPS. This app is awesome. Here are two screenshots of the Chinaman Gulch trail I did this past weekend in CO. The first is the trail overlayed on an aerial map; the second is the same trail overlayed on the U.S. Forest Service Topo Map:

Gold Miner Wanna save a bunch of money?
I've owned two Garmin units over the years.
I ditched them both and now run the ViewRanger (GPS) app on my smartphone. The app cost $14.99 and works as well/better than either of the Garmin handhelds that I previously owned. Great features and very accurate. The app does not require cell service to work... runs off satellites. Many many many maps are downloadable for it (Nat Geo topos, etc.). Can run the app on tablets or smarty phones. Battery life of your device is the only limiting factor.... I use a Moto RAZR MAXX so battery life is not an issue.
If you have your heart set on a Garmin, go for it... certainly not necessary. I like this app better than either of the Garmins I've owned and will never look back.

What is the best Garmin GPS

What is the best Garmin GPS for off road trails? I really don't care about city road and highway capability and I would like one with a 5 inch screen.
