really? why not just unzip a window & crawl in? friends of mine played a prank on my one winter. i had a feeling they were going to try to do something "inside" my jeep. i went in to visit a lady friend & locked my jeep up outside. when i came out they had my whole top folded down for me in the snow (luckily it just started).

Had it made for my LJ..... less than $100 but it came raw, I had to paint it and install it. Thinking about putting carpet on the top to help it blend in.

I don't usually keep expensive stuff in it. It came with a pioneer stereo, which kinda sucks, but it catches the eye. I am also thinking of welding up an overhead compartment. That would be a little more challenging than just the sheet metal back. I'm on a real budget here, so I build what I cannot afford.

|homebrwd||I would go with an NX series Bestop Softtop. Either the SuperTop or the TrekTop depending on your style. They will come with ALL the hardware you will need to install them which you wont currently have. Full doors shouldn't make a huge difference as tot he top you get. As far as security, I don't leave anything of value in my Jeep, especially not visible and I just leave the doors unlocked. If they are going to try and steel something that isn't there I'd prefer they just open the door and not cut my top. You can also look into the Tuffy center console or glovebox.|

I ahve a 2005 jeep unlimited. I live in canada and would like to but a used hard top. I would consider swapping my soft top for a hard top plus some $$. Soft top is factory grey and in great condition.

If on a budget find a complete frame on CL (100 or less), and get a replaceatop (Quadratop). If flexible on budget supertop nx can be cheaper on amazon than elsewhere and comes with hardware. If you are able to keep hard top, maybe frameless top for summer? I have a 2.5 and only have soft top. I'd never let a hard top go if I had it, I envy you. I wish I had options.
Security: I see everyone saying-Keep bare minimum in it. Don't blast fancy tunes. Park by windows (busy area). If it is shiny, they see it too! Etc... I have a friend who bolted/bracketed an insta trunk he got for 100 bucks(CL), and I swear you would have to cut the damn thing out to get anything from it. Personally, I don't even lock mine. I've had rocks thrown through the plastic windows, friends' tops who were sliced, dog punched through my rear window. If they want it, they will get to it. Tricky screws bolts etc... make the average meth head confused and quit easy.

I sold my hard top for $1300 (during the winter ). List your hard top on CL once you decide what soft top you want--and then buy brand new. Bestop is a good choice; you'll need the door surrounds, window header, and likely rear tailgate gear. For some reason I have an extra set of the rear tailgate stuff (I think) -- possibly came with my door surrounds? So I don't think you'll need those individually. Selling the Hard Top should easily cover the below, which are easily available on amazon.
Bestop 55012-01 Black Door Surround Kit for 97-06 Wrangler including Unlimited : Amazon.com : Automotive
Bestop 79141-35 Black Diamond Sailcloth Replace-a-Top Soft Top with Tinted Windows; no door skins included for 03-06 Wrangler (except Unlimited) : Amazon.com : Automotive
You'll still need the factory bows and such, but ebay, junkyard, CL or whatever works great for those.

The other thing is security. I always keep road kit stuff with me (socket set, first aid kit, flares, etc). It also has a decent Ste Rio that I need to protect. I saw some lock boxes in the same catalog as above, but they are way overpriced for what they are. I am planning on custom building a top bar for storage that will have locking doors for my fast pass and sunglasses. If anybody has accessories like that, it would be nice to get info on that. If I can, I would like to keep this top, but I would have to buy at least $1k in parts and accessories to get this thing secure enough for me to feel comfortable leaving it around town.

|Wattapunk||Just make sure if you buy used or new, that the hardware is complete. (ST frame, windshield header, tailgate bar, and door surrounds.) Never had issues with leaks on mine(when I had a softtop), now I don't care about leaks anymore since I run a safari / CRES setup since winter along with monstalining the interior. Looking into the Bestop vinyl seat covers soon. I don't carry anything of value in the Jeep but do have an Autopage with interior sensor with power door locks(main reason for the alarm) You will not have a problem selling or trading the HT for ST with cash.|

|4x4jeeptj||If you were in NC i would trade you and give you some cash. The best thing for you to do is search craigslist and try to find a complete soft top with hardware. Even if you could find just the hardware snatch it up. A replace a top is only 280 from 4wp. I would keep your hard top though. You will miss it in the cold, wet, snowy, sleety weather. And its a lot less noisy. Just do some searching, dont jump the gun on trading or buying a 800 dollar soft top. You could even buy a bikini/safari top. I just got a safari and duster cover for mine off of craigslist for 100 bucks in excellent condition. Hope you get what you want without breaking the bank!|

Not sure if this is right area for this but I would say you have a couple options. You could post in classifieds and see what kind of offers you get. Find someone local to inspect each other's goods and swap. Purchase something like a supertop nx, and have all brand new hardware and top but be out a good chunk of cash (still have hardtop for winter/back up). Could go frame-less and dual top it.
I have a 4cyl and the only reason I have a soft top is because it impossible for me to find a hard top that won't break bank or in crap shape. Is this a budget thing or a trap?

Want to swap hard top for soft
After a few months of owning a 4-cylinder, I am looking into getting a soft top. I know nothing about soft tops. The reasons I want to swap are as follows: less weight for the engine to haul; and ability to easily stow the top during nice weather (jeep has no a/c).
Now, I want to know some of your setups if you roll around like how I want to. What type of soft top you have (I have full doors BTW), what accessories you have for the Jeep to help with the soft top experience (security, waterproofing, etc.), and what method I should take to trade a hard top for a soft.
I need some thoughts please on how to get this process going!
