Scootsk PO brought the Jeep to the dealer and they couldn't find it. Surprised there was never a TSB issued. Seems like a pretty common problem.

DermJeep This was a huge help, nice find. My recently acquired '02 TJ had all the problems described above, including a fierce rattle in the dash bezel.

Not sure yet, haven't had a chance to drive her again. From the before and after thumping I did on the dash, it seems to have removed the rattle.

It was in the dash by the defroster vent. It seemz everytime i pull the cover i find something else.

OhSixTJ Mine were missing. M6 did the trick! Associate at Home Depot gave them to me because they weren't in a package. Dash is solid now.

My two studs that had missing nuts were corroded all the way down the threads, so someone either took them off a long time ago, or the factory never installed them in the first place. Haven't had a chance to drive the Jeep to see if that fixed it, but it locked down my dash pretty well compared to what it was like before. Good find.

I was also missing the two screws that secure the bottom plastic dash piece right below the steering column (someone took my dash apart, probably to install a CB from the looks of it). Your center bezel, the thing that surrounds the center vents/radio/heater controls may be loose as well. Mine was missing a clip that someone broke off, and it was part of the rattle source. I took it off and fan some foam tape around the edge, where it contacts the dash, and that fixed one of the rattles. HTH

Scootsk Here's some pics. The grille can be pulled up by hand. As you can see they are right next to the defroster vent.

mrobinso I am checking this tonight. I have had a terrible rattle in my dash and I am crossing my fingers this is the cause.
04-17-2013 02:24 PM
Nashorn101 When I wheel my TJ even through gravel out in the country, my whole dash will shake and rattle almost violently. Not sure if this would be the same problem you are having but pictures and maybe a little more detail would really help us and me!

So the screws are just located under the defroster vent?

Jerry Bransford Nice find, thanks for that insight! My previous TJ developed a fierce dash rattle which took me too long to find... it was from a broken spot weld on the firewall that held the nut the radiator support rod bolted to.

What broke the spot weld? The weight of the Hi-Lift jack I used to carry that was supported by the radiator support rods.
