That clicking noise could be a lot of thngs but, with 170k on the clock a sticking valve is most likely the culprit. Ideally you'd want to run a compression test on each cylinder to confirm it. That translates into a valve job. You can use that to help negotiate a selling price.
Understand that is something that you dont want to put off and fix as soon as possible. Again, once you've verified that is the issue. Hope that helps and Good Luck!

About to buy TJ, need help
I'm looking at purchasing a 1998 TJ, manual, I6, with about 170,000 miles on it. I test drove yesterday and drives smooth, feels like newer clutch, and 4x4 works. However, I noticed a clicking sound coming from under the hood when accelerating (sounds like when you put a baseball card in a kid's bike spokes). I thought it might be something in the fan, but couldn't find anything. Sounds more like it's coming from the block. It also "chugs" when you shut it off (sounds like when it dies when in gear and let out clutch). I'm new to Jeeps and was wondering if this was common? fixable? or am I possibly buying a lemon.
I have it $5000 out the door....so it appears to be a good deal...just don't know if it's "too good."
I appreciate any feedback/thoughts!!!!
