CoreyZ Yup, illegal. Its a state contracted company that does the smog checks. While the person running it may be shady, it doesnt mean they all are.
As Gold said... contact the state and give them your info, or contact the smog company (clean air colorado I think?) and find out what they suggest. If things get really expensive, honestly look into the registration of it in another county/state that doesnt have the smog checks.

Gold Miner Of course bribery is illegal.
I would not recommend it. Contact the State to weigh your options regarding the older engine in your Jeep.... I'm sure you're not the first and there may be some exceptions for your situation. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask before you spend a bunch of money or do something illegal.

Registering your car as is even if you passed emissions by adding cats is illegal cause of your engine swap.

Lots of BMW guys (like me) run x-pipes with cat-deletes and just pay up to pass smog. Some places, like Oregon (if I recall correctly) have gov't contracted places that run the smog, if that's what you have to pass in CO (it sounded to me like some counties had those) I wouldn't try it. If you just have to go to some mom&pop mechanic shop that will smog your car, definitely just pay up to pass. That's why I suggested going to a performance car place that sells OHV exhausts and they'll point you in the right direction.

100% agree. The test should be based on the year of the engine... regardless the year of the body/chassis it resides in.
They should be testing the soul... not he body, who cares if the soul is older than the body (profound?).

That STILL makes no sense. Emissions are all drivetrain related with the motor, exhaust and fuel systems. When you replace the motor with something else, those pieces tend to be replaced with them. Why not have emissions based on the year of the motor, not the chassis that its wedged into? Some crock of S&&*T government agency is making laws that are essentially trying to get rid of old motors over time. My frame doesn't cause the ozone to deplete.

Go to a performance shop for imports -- as they love to run fart cans and no cats -- and ask the mechanic which shops will pass your smog without cats, and how much they charge. It'll be 2-4 times the normal smog test price (so like $100-150). Take $40 extra bucks to make sure. Drive up, hand them the cash, and they'll pass you. If they won't except your offer (it's obvious what you're trying to do) give them an extra $20 or $40 bucks, and at that point they'll either take it or just say no and give you your cash back.

jeepndon The reason you have to have the same year or better engine is because you have to meet the emissions for the year your car is built. There is nothing Nazi about it I am surprised how lax the rules are in this state for inspections.

get a PO in WY and register it up there. Or find a friend in another state/county that doesnt have emissions and just use their address.

Gold Miner Geez, that's ridiculous.

Who the heck writes that kind of technicality into a law, not right... not right at all. Whomever wrote that into the law must have a chip against street rod builders? I don't get it. If it can pass emissions, who cares what year the engine is?
Now I wonder if that law applies to Emissions-Only vehicles... or all.

fireguy wtf !! Not only do the bureaucrats screw with our gun laws the jerks start telling us what we can and cannot do with our vehicles. Thanks Tshields for the info and good work on your part. Looks like a bunch of Nazi's infiltrated our state govt. I generally try to pay attention to what is going on but I sure did not hear about these laws being passed.

BreckenridgeYJ I do not envy any of you... Not emissions testing in Breckenridge either (Summit County). Then again, I don't think I'd have any issues with it, but for new projects its nice not to have to!

fireguy Usually the engine swaps don't factor in. But a V8 may put out more emmissions than a 4.0 I6 or 4 cyl. That may come up, but a well tuned and runing V8 should be ok. They are strict on the exhaust mods as far as having a Catlyic Converter in place and working and also they may check on your fuel tank vent and vapor control lines to the emission canister that is tied into the intake system if the vehicle was equipped with those devices. Overall the requirements on the older vehicles are loose enough that a decent running vehicle will pass. I don't know how close into town you want to be but some of the emission exempt areas are only 30 to 45 minute commutes to the suburbs of the Denver Metro area. I live near Conifer in Park County ( emission exempt ) and my commute is 45 minutes to work. Same goes with Elbert and El Paso counties to the southeast and southern suburbs.

It wasn't too difficult the engine bay on the YJ is big enough there wasn't a problem. I'm actually looking at putting a 318 into it eventually.
