|03rubi||Yes, the Gibson has a oval muffler. You just need to turn it a little and it fits just fine. And by the way, Jerry B. is right about the hype on cat back exhausts. The only reason I bought the Gibson is because I got a real good deal on it.|

|Jerry Bransford||Trust us man, a muffler is a muffler where that goes. If anything, an inexpensive muffler like a Thrush or other glass pack probably has the same or even less back pressure. Don't believe all the hype about those cat-back systems, they are all overpriced and overhyped. And to be sure, less backpressure may or may not always be good... engines require at least some back pressure in order to efficiently scavage out the exhaust gases. Don't over-analyze this, you just need your muffler re-configured and once done, you're not going to notice any performance difference.|

If I go to a shop how will I know that the muffler they choose isn't going to restrict performance? Does the shop look up the recommended flow/back pressure(or other specs I have no clue about) for the engine and find a compatible smaller unit or will they find something that physically fits and start welding? I don't want to lose any power.

|wallybloke||I bought the Gibson and It should fit with the standard RE long arm. My problem was the Trilink put a control arm right where the muffler should go. I ended up doing as Jerry said just getting a local shop to bend me an exhaust. We put the small oval muffler in a position up over the axle. It's not in the way and it really sounds great. I'm not sure what brand maybe a Flowmaster but it is less then half the length of the 40 series. Cost much less then the Gibson.|

|Jerry Bransford||Why buy an expensive bolt-on cat-back kit when you can just have an inexpensive muffler installed by your local independent muffler shop for way less $$$? My new Thrush muffler and labor charge to re-route the pipe came to something like $85 total. Of course if you go to a chain muffler shop like Midas, that $85 will likely be $285.|

|Jerry Bransford||Mufflers don't need to meet CARB requirements but exhaust systems do. I just had the muffler replaced with a short Thrush brand muffler and had the routing changed just enough to make it fit with the RE LA suspension. Mine has passed the Calif. smog visual check 3 times now without problem.|

03Rubi, is the Gibson exhaust oval shaped and similar size to the stock unit? If so, I am a little concerned about clearance because the instructions advise that a smaller muffler is needed. Maybe they state that in all their instructions because the Tri-link kit won't fit with stock exhaust, and they are just playing it safe.
I am thinking about buying the MBRP cat-back system because it looks smaller and is round instead of oval. Does anyone have any experience with MBRP or similar(round) bolt on cat-back?
BTW, I have the Extreme Duty Long Arm kit, not the tri-link kit.

|wallybloke||Be aware, the Gibson exhaust will only fit the standard long arm lift. If you get the Trilink it will not fit. Been there done that.|

|jeeperman||Full Traction also makes a kit for long arm conversions... Or you could have a custom kit made up at an exhaust shop.. My guy welded the cat and a resonator out of a 1991 GEO Prism together, and they fit next to the transmission above the skid plate. Pretty good sound too...|

What exhaust will fit with my RE 5.5 lift?
I am installing a Rubicon Express 5.5 Extreme Duty long arm lift on my 2002 Sahara and the instructions advise that a smaller exhaust is necessary. In the photo in the instructions it looks like they have a cherry bomb or similar setup. My main concern is that the new exhaust will meet CA emissions. Thanks in advance.
