Mountain goat Oops I kind of abandoned this thread. I did finish it it works great. I had some sunglasses stolen out of it so I bought a lock from the hardware store. It has a ton of space and I really enjoy it. I don't have cup holders which isn't that bad, and I also have my tire iron stored in there.

Mountain goat The past few days I have worked on the mount. For now it will be wooden because I don't have the tools to work in metal but eventually I will make a metal one. So I made a box and then scribed the curves of the tub and cut it out

Attachment 251861

Then I proceeded to adjust the cuts so it would sit level in the tub

Attachment 251860

Attachment 251862

Yesterday I put the final coat of paint on so I will have pictures of it painted some time later. Hoping to get it completely installed today when I get home from school

Mountain goat Got the hinge finished yesterday. Took a little elbow grease but with a hammer and a punch I was able to bend the tabs in.

Attachment 246183

Attachment 246184

Here is a view of the hinge from the inside even though it is hard to see. And also one of it open. It doesn't stay open I am holding it. I will have to get something to hold it open or just deal with it.

vawt33 Subscribed. I have been wanting to do this for a long time, and now I am in between projects. Looking forward to seeing the progress and hearing other peoples suggestions. Good luck with it.

Mountain goat Well today was a great day I started cutting the fingers for the hinge. I just used a dremel tool with those cutting wheels. Worked pretty good except for the fact that the wheels break up really fast

After. I also started cutting the lid for the fingers to go into

Mountain goat I got my ammo can today

Attachment 243960

I am going to start working on it and will turn this into my "build" thread for the console. When I got it I looked at it and couldn't think of how to hindge it so I would enjoy directions or pics to do that. I am hoping to start tommorow and will take lots of pics because as far as I know I haven't seen complete directions to make one. So hopefully I will help any future console makers.

SuperMidget the wife's is hinged just by grinding down the top lip on the back L that the lid sits into to allow it to open to about 80 degrees or so and the plate on the back handle you would pull up to open that end is bolted down... don't have any pics of it but its pretty simple

Mountain goat Ordered an ammo can today should be here friday or sometime next week... Just gotta get some steel to make brackets and something to use for cup holders I kinda have a plan in my head on how it will turn out but nothing ever goes the way you want it so we will see

The can I ordered is a 20 mm and the lid comes all the way off. Does anyone know how I can make it hinged? I have a few ideas but would like an "experts" opinion

Just my two cents. I'm looking to customize a console because I have one that came w/ my Jeep and it has a lock and it's made out of plywood so it's not very secure (Vertically Driven Products 41511C - VDP Deluxe Ultimate Console for 76-95 Jeep CJ & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec). Ammo box w/ a padlock would be more secure.

Also you should use self tapping screws to screw into the floor.
Just bought this one, installed yesterday. Quality is great, tight fit though. The lock is a little chintzy but I'm gonna just go buy one from home cheapo and mod it in.

Mountain goat Edit: ok after measuring my console and then looking at ammo cans I think I will go with the 20 mm one. It is slightly shorter than my current console but I t is also taller so it is about the same storage space. I still would like to see pics and would like advice on the mount. I am not able to weld so it will need to be bolts or something easy.

Something along the lines of this:

Unless you have other/better ideas. Also would like ideas for cup holders.
Thank you all for your help.

P.S. sorry for all of the grammatical errors I am typing on my iPad and autocorrect is stupid sometimes

I have read some thread on here that sais that console sucks is that the one you are modding?
I would love to see what mods you make. I was planing on getting that one until I read the bad reviews so that's why I decided to mod/make one.

Thanks for the input btw
Yeah that console does suck, I'm the one who posted the neg. review and everyone else agreed. I'm not modding it, I'm replacing it. I'm either gonna to the ammo can or make one out of sheet steel and angle steel like you can buy at Home Depot. I made a molle rack for the inside of my tailgate out of the aluminum angles and straights. I can probably do a console.

Mountain goat Sweet thanks for the replies. Do you know of any pick a parts near Kansas City?

I have thought about it a little more and I do agree that plywood would take up space so I was thinking of finding one and modding it for my needs. Which aren't complicated (4cup holders and tall enough to be an arm rest) and eventually if I decide to get a subwoofer I would like the option to fit one in the console.

So if you know any pick a parts near Kansas City let me know. Or if you have a console you want to get rid of pm me and we can talk about a trade or something.

Beachcruiser I'd take a trip thru your local pic a part auto yard....you might find a usable console for a few bucks that could be adapted w/ a little blocking on the bottom. Pretty easy to spray/dye it black, or whatever.
03-30-2013 08:56 AM
Jeep_Monkey You do not have to contour the bottom to exactly fit the floor... at least not side-to side. There are other options. I have a console I have bought and installed. I saved up the money to buy a Tuffy security console... heavy metal deal. Glad I waited.

But like you, I thought long and hard about actually building my own. The approach I was considering was to start by removing the seats... at least one of them so you can see what you are doing. It is not hard. Two bolts from the top, two from underneath the jeep. Determine front-to-back profile for the side fo the box. It doesn't have to be full contact, as long as it sits steady. The floor of the console can be raised up to clear the rounded hump section. From the end, the floor of the console would be suspended between the two sides like the crossbar of a capital "H."

The width of the console is important. If you make it too wide, it will crowd the seat and seat belts. I recommend putting some kind of strap to secure the seatbelt so it doesn't get trapped between the seat and the console.

One of the things that turned me away from building my own was that I wanted something secure enough to put stuff in and know it would be there when I got back. I travel with 3-4 GoPro cameras, a couple Canon cameras, GPS, etc. About the only way I could have come anywhere close to the strength of this Tuffy console would be to build something out of metal plate. When I figured materials and welding, it was going to be about as expensive as just buying one.

The other thing is that the plywood that I was originally thinking about using was a lot thicker than the commercial consoles... so I would have paid a penalty on storage volume.

I am interested in seeing what you put together.

Center console

Hey everyone I am looking to upgrade my console but I a on a budget and want to get the best bang for my buck. I was looking around and of course all the onesies like are 80 $ and up so I was thinking why not build one.

I have been looking for a thread with a custom console but all I found was the ammo can one. But I was thinking more along the lines of plywood and/or fiberglass. So if anyone has built their own plywood console I would love to see some pictures.

After I got this Idea I realized that the floor is not flat so I will have to contour the bottom of the "box" this is the part I think will be hardest so pictures of this or any ideas on how to go through with it would be helpful. Also how would you mount it? A bracket or just use the factory holes? Any ideas?

Thanks for your input and once I decide what to do I will try my best to keep you updated with pics and steps.
