hrun The factory sailcloth is worth fixing. I have the original sailcloth top on my 2001 TJ. Other than the velcro wearing out on the windows the top is still in good shape. I'll be replacing it this week due to one of the door windows having a 10 inch split last winter.

Tdog02 Keep factory top as long as its in good shape, just repair it. Zipper lube?!? Snake oil if you ask me... Get some Gulf wax (cooking/canning wax) and rub them once a month. Really, zippers that are washed and waxed are maintained. If you are really, really cheap just get a pack of cheap candles.

Atthehop I agree with Jerry, I only have the OEM soft top, no hard top or full doors by choice, since new and no garage. It has been through 9 years of all types of weather here in the northeast and is still going strong. In fact it's getting warm and time to lube all the zippers so taking the windows off does not damage them.

BTW, zipper lube is cheap at any outdoor camping store as compared to the dealer.

Jerry Bransford The quality of your OE top, being made from Sailcloth, is much better than what you'd get from QT. Sailcloth is heavier, more rugged, and gives a significantly quieter interior. I would spend the $$$ to get the zipper replaced, though $150 to replace a zipper seems awfully high to me. I'd call around to various boat canvas repair shops to see if someone would be more reasonable cost-wise.

Jace446 The place I talked to is also a boat shop lol, but he said he couldn't tell if the teeth on the window or the actual top were messed up so he'd have to replace both. Other than the zipper nothing else is wrong with the top, which is why I don't really want to buy a new one. I've been looking on CL and can't find any good tops with the windows

nicodemus I would also examine the clarity of the plastic. Can you see through it easily, or is it all cloudy and scratched? For me that was the straw that broke the camels back, I could have probably made due with the crappy zippers if the windows were clear and well maintained.

CJChet Check out a boat canvas shop. I had one done for a WHOLE lot less than that!

Fixing factory top or replacing it?

When I bought my 04 rubicon from the dealer it only came with a soft top, which looked to be in good condition. A few weeks after I bought it I looked back and the rear window came unzipped and I had to break the zipper off to get it to close. I talked to a place who does upholstery and repairs and they said to fix the teeth and replace the zipper it would be about $150. The canvas is perfect and there's no leaks, I guess I'm looking for opinions on whether or not its worth it to fix the window or to just buy a quadratop.
Thanks in advance.
