jricher82 Home Depot, Lowes or TSC are all great places to find grade 8 hardware, just wanted to +1 on what the guys above were saying. You'll be pulling your hair out looking for an exact replacement, waiting forever for a special order or overpaying for an OEM fastener. Do yourself a favor, upgrade to grade 8 and don't forget the ANI-SEIZE! You won't have that problem again when trying to remove that bolt in the future.

sevenservices TSC, Tractor Supply Company is a great place to find grade 8 bolts.

Couple things on your locking nut, see if a large flathead will fit into one of the slots, use a wrench on it or visegrips to try and turn it. Might brake a flathead but its worth a shot... I've also seen a regular lugnut spot welded onto one to use a regular socket to pull it. And, then again, I've also seen 'em blasted into bits with a cutting torch but it would leave a blackspot on the aluminum rim.

Or, save a lot of hassle. Stop at a local tire shop and say "hey, can you get this nut off for me?" chances are, they see that problem almost daily and have the tools to do it quick.

richsipe Both my bolt head welds broke during my bumper install ... still trying to figure out how to tighten the new ones since the head of the bolt is inside the frame rail and the bolt just spins...

I don't really want to drill the frame rail to get in there and do something like weld the head. But the access hole isn't big enough to get at the bolt at all due to the angle. Interested what you get figured out.

Jerry Bransford That is a 3/8" bolt IIRC & you only need to make sure the replacement bolt is Grade 5 as the factory installed, or Grade 8 which is stronger. I wouldn't be surprised if a big home improvement store like Lowes had them but the odds of finding the exact bolt you need are higher in a smaller hardware store that tends to stock more of that type of hardware. Large chain stores only stock items that sell quickly and Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolts aren't big sellers to people fixing their lawn mowers etc.

lethal_inject1on I ground the head off the rear bolt and pushed it into the frame rail. However I need to replace the front bolt. Would a place like Lowes or Menards have them, or do I need to order one ?

I thought about grinding the head off the bolt but did not know if it was safe since the gas tank is so close

Haines15 Sometimes if you apply pressure to the welded nut sometimes you can break it loose. I'd use a pry bar. If not you can always just use a grinder. I had to do it a bunch of times when I installed my lift kit.

jricher82 That bolt is spinning because there's a welded nut in the frame that the bolts threads to. One of two things is going on, either the bolt is broken and part of it is still threaded in the nut or the weld on the nut came undone and the bolt is spinning inside with the nut still on it. You may have to cut the bolt head off (not abnormal, I've cut off plent of stock hardware for bumpers/suspension etc.) You can always replace the hardware with grade 8 stuff from any hardware store.

As for the locking lugnut, I lost my tool once and was able to find the manufacturer information in all the paperwork included in the Jeep with the owners manual. You should be able to call them or request a new tool online so you can get that lugnut off. I don't remember the name but if you don't have the paperwork, call you local dealership, let them know your issue. They may be able to provide you with a new tool or they may be able to let u know how to get your hands on a new one.

When I get home, I'll check my paperwork and try and get the info for that tool. Let me know how u make out with that bolt.

flflash These work very well for removing locking lug nuts when you do not have the key, cheap too Mechanics M980 Emergency Lug Nut Remover Socket Set: Tools : Walmart.com

Sometimes driving a chisel/prybar between the hook and bumper so here's pressure on the nut will help get those aggravating bumper bolts off.

Ryman12 1: There is probably a welded nut or threaded plate up in the frame that is spinning. My solution would be to either cut the head of the bolt off and pop the plate back in the frame or to use a pry bar and pry down on the hook while kitting the bolt with an impact gun.
2: Try going back to the dealership? Either that or hammer on a socket over the bolt and then replace it with a normal lug nut.

Damn bumber bolt

I have two questions.

First: I am in the process of removing the factory bolts that hold the rear bumper on(so I can add a hitch) and one of the bolts on the drivers side that is holding the hook on is just spinning. Any suggestions ?


Second: Does anyone know where I can buy a tool to remove the lugnut lock on my spare tire.... the dealership that I bought the Jeep from did not include it.
