|Plowboy1970||I held out and got a 4.0 automatic. Then I got a 2.5 stick. I can't believe how much more the 4.0 has over the 2.5 Look around for 4.0's but move quick on deals. Got my stock 97 4.0 for $5k with 121k with full doors and hard top. Now the 97 2.5 I got in running condition for $500!!! If it wasn't so cheap I would not have bought it. Good luck.|

4 it will most probably be then !! MPG is not a main concern up to a certain point....but if they are pretty much equal then hey !!!
It could also be that gas is 5.30$ a gallon where I live hahaha
Also I dont know what the prices are for you guys but up here in Quebec they are pretty cheap !!
This is the one im looking at, its in french so ill translate: Overall its a 2001 Tj 60th aniversary special, 4L, brakes are brand new,summer and winters on rims, soft and hard top but its has 125 000 miles...... It looks clean as hell !!!!

|Helmsy||I have a 2.5. I don't generally go on the highway but when I do I just stay in the slow lane with the truckers. Not really a big deal to me and I don't get in too big of a hurry. But you really can't keep up with traffic on the highway. I have 31s and don't see a big difference (if any) from stock. As long as you know the limitations of the 2.5 it's fine. I drove mine 1200 miles from Texas to Ohio (bought it from my aunt in Texas) and it did take longer than it should have i would do it again. That was by far the funniest road trip I've ever took.|

|Jo1175||I've had all the engines that the TJs come with.... 2.5 is by far the worst... Especially in an auto... Even with small tires. Eats more gas then the 6cyl.. Even thou windows stickers say different. I have a 2.4 in my 05 with a 6 speed... Better then 2.5 but still sucks on gas and the 6cyl 4.0 is still better on fuel.... If you are just cruising and not beating on it. With the 4cyl's I've always found myself winding out the gears cause there is no power.... Never in my Sahara...Plus with the 4.0 you have a chance to find one with the dana44...I see a lot of 2.5 for sale with 33 in tires and its something I would never want nor do I see it getting out of its own way... Now add hardtop, gear, people, full tank... Mud! And of you didnt know they have an oil pressure issue...|

|Keithmmason||I have a 2.5 and it doesn't have the highway power. I also have a hard time with 31's and stock gears hitting above 70 on the highway. There is no good way around it but I love my TJ. That said I have 170,000miles and its still strong and mostly tight so don't read into the hype that the 2.5 doesn't last as long as the 4.0. I wouldn't sway away from buying another 2.5 but its not like I'm driving it across the country either|

|apaTJ||I would imagine you could get a 4.0 for that price range, but it will probably have upwards of 150k on it or have damage. The 4.0 will last longer than the 2.5 IMO so it's worth it to get a 4.0 with higher miles over a 2.5 with lower miles if they're close in price.|

|Bielzebub||I have to agree with everyone else, get the 4.0. I have the 2.5L on 31's and I have seen 70+ when going downhill and on some flats, but that's about it. If you come to an uphill, don't even think about trying to pass. You will def. lose speed. I know I drop at least 6 or 8 mph on every hill on the highway. Gain speed going down one hill and lose most of it trying to make it up the next. Plus I have noticed that when trying to maintain speed on uphills at hwy speeds my automatic downshifts and the engine sounds like it's going to blow at like 4.5 ~ 5k rpm...|

|Airtight||You won't be going 70-80 mph much in a 2.5. I have 31's on my 97 with stock gearing, and I've only seen 70 a couple f times briefly. I say if you can get a 4.0, get it. I've never driven one, but why not? Also, the 2.5 won't really save you any fuel like I thought, so if you can get the 4.0 go for it.|

|Daswrangler||Had a '97 2.5 5spd, didn't think it was that bad until I got my new '06 4.0. I literally can't believe I had the 2.5 for as long as I did. I would definitely hold off on any 2.5 you see. You will thank yourself later.|

Which Engine on a TJ 1997-2000
Hey guys im new to the forum, i'm looking to buy a TJ between 1997-2000 for around 4500$-5500$ stock and clean.
Although I would love to go mudding I wont have much time because of work
Ill be using it to drive to work and driving around and hopefully maybe sometimes to get it dirty but im really wondering for everyday day driving which engine and/or transmission is the best for fuel efficiency and average speed ( I like to drive 70-80 mph on the highway). Ive read forums saying that the 2.5l has no power on the highway is that true ???
