Jeepinb I still feel the same way I felt 2 years ago. Although, I must say it has held up pretty well, despite the fact that I had to have one of the rear straps sowed back on last summer. I'm actually trying to get rid of mine so I can buy a bikini top for the summer, then I plan on going back to a top with a frame. In my opinion it's much more convenient to fold the top down, and have it there in case you need it.

I don't usually take the entire thing off. I just take the windows out and be done with it. The windows are awkward to store because of built in Plastic pieces in the rear of the window. I usually leave them in our hotel room/tent when we go out. I can have the windows out in a matter of 10 mins, 20 mins to take the entire top off, 30ish to put the whole thing back on.

Kota7x I just want to update my stance on the Trek-Top NX a year later:

Background:
This is my only top for the Jeep. It goes where ever the Jeep goes. Up until 6 months ago it was outside in the sun and rain all the time. Now it is garaged.

The Goods:
The top still looks great. It has held up to snow, 80MPH winds, sand, dirt, etc. It hasn't loosened up too much so it is still a bit of a bitch putting the windows in. I rarely take the Safari top off and just run without doors and windows. Im just lazy and I like the shade. All the components that come with the top (ie: surrounds, header, tailgate bar, etc.) have held up and show no signs of wear, with the exception of the Tailgate bar. The rubber seal on my tailgate bar has had to be siliconed on in a couple spots, not a big deal.

The Bad:
Of course I expect wear on a soft top with use. In an earlier post in this thread, I had the rear channel for the rear window rip out of the top. My fix has held for this time and I still believe it is stronger than when it came out of the factory. I have also had a tear at the top of the zipper where the zipper meets the window vinyl. Its probably from tugging on the window to get it into place. If it ever gets worse Ill take it to a canvas shop and have it re-done. I have also noticed the sailcloth around the inside of the windows is fraying in a few spots.

Overall:
I think the top has held up great for what I have put it through. It has seen the California Deserts, mountains, beaches, etc. and it will continue to see them. I can't begin to count how many compliments I have gotten on the top in this time from people asking me "what brand?", or "Sick Jeep", or the likes. If you are planning on getting the Trek-Top NX, expect a little tougher time putting windows in. But other than that it is a great top and I change my opinion from "going to another top" to "getting another Trek-NX". I would definitely buy another!!!

malrtrTJ I have a 2000 Model and I'm seriously looking into purchasing this top, but I'm curious about how easy it is to take the whole thing off and go completely toppless? And does it store easily on the jeep when completely off?

Installing the Trektop on a 2003 Wrangler

Ive had the trektop on my 2003 wrangler for a year now and I have found the easiest way to install is first move it into the sun so it warms up.. Second, you start from the very top and then work your way around zipping the windows on. Dont start attaching it to the door surrounds untill you have both side, and rear windows completely zippped in ! Then start tucking the side windows into the door surrounds first, and then start tucking the bottom of the windows into the jeep tub. Once I have the top installed, I like to roll up the back window with the doors off, because I have found that if I just unzip the back window to take it out, I cant get it zipped back in without undoing the rest of the top to loosen it up.... I finally just unzipped the back widow most of the way up, and put two small bungy cords in the top window seams and hooked them to a large bungy I hooked up in the back horizontally to the roll cage... If youre still following this thread Geoff 2 straps to just hold that back window up instead of taking it out would be nice ! This is a great softop, I like it!

Nuke83 I didn't have any trouble. I had read enough to know to leave it sitting in the sun while I installed the frame and I also took it nice and slow when buttoning it up. I'd zip a little, then let it sit. Go from one side to the other. Was in no real hurry, so didn't rush it. Definitely watch Bestop's YouTube video on the install. I used the included instructions (which suck) as a general guide, but had an iPad with the video with me and relied on it. Watch it a couple of times before doing the install and you'll have no problem at all.

Once I had it fully installed, I didn't remove the panels for a week or so. Gave it time to stretch out.

Since original install, I've had the panels out and back in twice. No problems and don't have to wait. It's nice and snug and looks great. Never once considered putting a pair of pliers to the zipper pulls. Fingers were a bit raw following the initial install but that was expected.

Have all panels out now and will put them back in today with rain expected over the next several days.

Like you, I live in Atlanta area and it was high 60's/low 70's when I did my initial install a month ago. My recommendation is to just be patient and know that if you're in a hurry, you'll have problems.

01TJ60 Any difficulty installing the top? I've read about the zippers breaking and the top being extremely tight and hard to put on unless it's 90+ deg. I'm considering one of these as I almost always use a bikini top but would like to have the sides available if caught in bad weather.

No, not like a factory top. You can remove the rear and rear side windows, and then fold back the sunrider top, so you essentially end up with a bikini top over the rear seats.

You can remove the entire top, but then you have to figure out how to tote it around in case of foul weather.

I have the Trektop NX on my 2013 JKU. Love it so far. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is a storage solution for the rear and rear side windows so I can carry them with me. For now, I'm pulling them off and leaving them at the house, but I have to play the weather channel game to make sure I'm not going to be caught with my top down. I'm thinking of a large diameter PVC tube that I can roll and store the panels in, then fit in the back, just haven't put any energy into that yet.

The pic below has the Trektop NX with the rear and rear side windows removed and the sunrider open. As you can see, the front folded over the back so that the rear seats are all that's covered. I've driven upwards of 70 mph in this config with no issue. Let me know if you want some pics from a different angle, but the net of it is that everything is open except the top covering the rear seats.

Then you lay the soft top upside-down on the ground (on a blanket!!), lay the header on it, and screw it to the header piece. Nice and easy and everything lined up well. The two end screws are different screws so don't get mixed up, and the fabric gets a bit off when you put them in but not bad.

Then, with a second person, you put it on the Jeep and attach the right and left bars. Lined up ok.

Then the straps next to the sound bar, and then the straps in back. ULTRA important to get everything centered and tight. This part was kind of tough, but expected.

Ah, then the back window. Sigh. There's a plastic or rubber piece at the top of the rear window that slides into a plastic or rubber channel at the top/back of the roof. WORST. TIME. EVER! Two of us, yanking this poor thing. I can't imagine doing this every time I want to take the back window off. I swear, it was terrible It slid a few inches sort of easily, and then just froze up. Then some hard pulling, and it would suddenly GIVE for a few inches and stop. Then of course you're yanking so hard that you go TOO far and have to yank it back the OTHER way... Sheesh, I hesitate to say poor design because Bestop knows what they are doing, but... It was not fun. I was actually standing with one foot on the bumper and the other on the rear tire leaning backwards while my partner held the other side of the top for dear life. UGH! Afterwards I thought - maybe soap or grease or silicone or something? But if something like that were necessary, the directions really should have mentioned it.

Then you zip the side windows in, a couple of inches. Then the back of the side windows, a couple inches. I'll spare you my nightmare of getting the zippers to go all the way. Leave it all in the sun for a couple hours, and then do your installation in the sun, is what I did. The side windows zip to the soft top, and the rear of the side windows zip to the rear window.

The zippers from the side window to the back window, for the last few inches, were so hard to zip that I broke the pull tab off of the driver's side zipper about an inch away from goal. Sigh. I suppose now I'll have to contact Bestop and replace the tab? The zipper? The window? Not sure what I'll have to do - I'll keep you all posted.

The rest, after the zippers, is tucking the plastic parts under the metal parts. It all fit VERY TIGHT but well - a nice fit. And then the velcro, which they call "hook fabric" or something because of brand name, but I actually spent a minute looking for a fabric hook! My fault!

Final impression - it looks fantastic. Seriously. It's tight, fits well, I love the bowless look and the fabric is thick and tough and looks nice. I drove a little up to 45mph and nothing flapped or rattled. Seems quieter than the factory soft top that was on it. I was very impressed with the stitching to the plastic strips. Very tight, no loose threads. And bonus - my 2000 TJ once again has new car smell!

So four out of five stars. I took a star because of the terrible time with the rear window, and the broken zipper tab.

Also, I didn't love the directions. They come as four pages stapled together and two or three steps on each page kind of oddly positioned - Better than IKEA but... I don't know, it's a very expensive top, I kind of expected a nice instruction book with color pictures, etc. But it did the job, so I didn't take that into my "star" consideration.

Rereading this, it kind of seems negative. I don't mean to be. It's an expensive top that looks excellent on my Jeep and I'm very happy with the way it looks. I had some problems with the install that I'm sure (hoping) that I can sort out with Bestop. I would definitely recommend this top. This is after a day - I'll repost after I've had it on a while.

I WOULD have taken pictures and posted them... But about 10 minutes after I got home from the drive the skies opened up and it hasn't brightened up. I'll take some tomorrow as it's supposed to be sunny. Happy 4th!
I'm thinking of getting a Trek top NX for my 2010 unlimited 4 door. I have a question though, if you can help....can the top be taken down completely? Like a normal factory top? To ride around with it completely open I mean? Thanks so much for your time.

2duckhunt I have to say I expected more from a company with the name Best top has. Mine came missing one of the plastic pieces that slides in the back pocket of the window. So I removed the other to match thinking that the one was some kind of packing. Not until I read about the plastic pieces on here did I realize I had been shorted. Then after getting everything on I noticed the passenger side window had a place pulling away from the seam and it leaks. Saddest thing is I have emailed best top and contacted them on here about the issues and no one has gotten back to me. I sort of wished I had gone with the regular top even though I like the looks of this one. If someone wants one in spice I might put it on them cheap.

I dunno why not I have had mine open rollin at 60+ no issues....the piece that folds back is secured with metal pins and the rest is strapped to the roll bars...I don't see anything in the instructions saying you cannot drive over 45 with it open...the only caution I saw was if you remove the side windows in the back you must remove the back window

I wouldn't recommend it. There is nothing holding the sunrider down like on the stock tops. It just goes back and rests on the roll bars. I think the instructions say not to exceed 45mph while that is pulled back.

Not really. Since you are having to stretch the windows around the roll bars, there really isnt any play room in the windows so you are fighting the windows around the bars. Even after having the top for a year, it is still difficult to stretch on to the Jeep. Of course I have found the trick to get it on the Jeep but it is still tight.

If I get another soft top it will either be this or a replace-a-top (I have the bows from my stock soft top still). It seems to be a lot simpler than the Trek NX.

I love the look of my Trektop NX but it is not worth the fight every time to put it on/take it off. I have also pulled some of the zippers out of the back window due to trying to stretch it even more than it would allow me. I also have a flapping up by the Drip rails that I am getting ready to put some foam up under the top to try and eliminate. Overall: Unless Bestop stops trying to cut corners with this top and use minimal stitching and fixes all of the weak spots on the top. I will probably go to a Rampage top next or go with a Gr8tops Half Hardtop.

Also, are the windows similar to putting on as the factory style? I've looked at the "besttop supertop nx" which comes with all new hardware, works like the factory style and has a sunroof feature, seems to be a good option also...? It just needs to warm up here in southern Ontario so I can actually cruise with the top down; so much for global warming!

I will let you know in a week when mine comes off completely for the first time as i will have an extra garage where I can park it all Summer.

I believe that like anything doing things in the right environment helps tremendously. I have 3 Corvettes and only use the bras for long road trips and they are a pain in the ass to install when cold or after being stored for a long time...if you heat them up in the sun they go on much easier. Also easier if you use them frequently so I have to believe that the more you go through the process the easier it becomes and trust me my middle name ain't "Patience"

Chili99 I installed mine a couple months ago when it was still cooler than optimum but I used a hairdryer to help when things got tough and then parked in the sun to get the back window finished. I only had a few issues but considering I am a first time owner and top installer I thought I did pretty well. Now that it has been installed a few months I am thinking about going back and tightening all the straps again since it has loosened up a bit.

I have the NX and its nothing like you describe for me. Could be user error, but I have no issues removing and installing the top (not including the initial install). Incredible top, superior quality.

Whoa, that's one of the nastiest reviews I've seen for this top...

Let me just say that's not close to the experience I've had. It's a tight fit - yes. It has to be, since it uses the roll bars as a frame since there isn't additional hardware. I've never had to loosen the sound bar to get the straps tight either. I do agree that it really won't fit in the back of the jeep if you take it off completely, but taking just the windows out and flipping the sunrider back has always been enough for me. Also, the top bar that used to slide around has been corrected in the new design - Bestop added a couple of hooks on either side that hold that bar in place. The new design is pretty darned easy to put together...at least after the initial installation. You have to let it stretch out, then it just gets easier and easier.

Jeepinb If you want ease of use and storage I would stick with the factory style top. The trek top nx is a pain in the ass to put back together, it's like a fucking jigsaw puzzle, and I can never get mine completely sealed. I had about a two inch gap all winter from the zipper on the rear window and the zipper on the side window. If you take the whole thing off I doubt it would fit behind your back seat, I'm not sure because I haven't had my back seat in for a few years. Which means I can't take my top with me when i take it off because it'll blow away. Also if you do take the whole thing off, to get the top part back on you have to loosen the sound bar to thread the straps around the roll bar. Lastly there's a bar that goes across the back of the roll bar, it acts as a support, which is cool, except it always wiggles it's way out when driving down the highway with the rest of the top and doors off. Storage?

I've read a lot of really good reviews about the "bestop trektop nx" but I'm having troubles finding much info about storage of the top once it's completely off (does it fit behind seat) and how easy/quick it is to put back on from being completely off. I've been a jeep owner for 7 years and have always had the factory top which I can put on in 5 mins by myself. I'm in need for a new one this summer and need some advice. If I'm gonna bother with taking the windows out, I prefer to take the top right off. Could someone give me some insight if the bestop trektop nx will work good for this or is it mostly just good for people who prefer to take just the windows off or use the sunroof feature?

Jeepinb I've owned a Jeep Wrangler for twelve years now and I think this is the worst top ever. First it's a pain in the but to put up in any weather. The only way I can get the back and side windows to zip together is too take the plastic piece that supports the side window at the back corner. Even if I do this it's still really difficult to get the back and side windows to zip together and then it looks terrible because it doesn't have that support. Secondly if I'm not home and want to take the back and side windows out I have no place to store them, because of that plastic support in the side windows I can't just roll up the side windows and shove them anywhere like I could with a regular tips windows. Thirdly the rear support bar always slides out when I'm driving down the road without the back and rear windows in, I'm just waiting for it to fly out at 65 mph and fly through someone's window. Lastly some a-hole jacked the little hinge pin thing a ma jig that allows the front part of the top to flip back. I called Bestop to purchase a replacement they informed me that I needed to buy a whole new door surround because they don't sell the pins separately. Needless to say I will be going back to a regular soft top when the money allows, for know I'll just cruise around with a bikini top like I've been doing for the last three years. I'm not even sure if I can unload this thing on Craigslist because it's such a POS. I'd genuinely fell bad for selling some one such junk. That's my opinion.

dacritterguy An answer! Finally! Thanks PM....it was as if people were avoiding the question (no matter how nice I asked it!). And I can work with that, for if I was going to take it all off (the Jeep at least) it'd be for days at a time. Well....I guess I'll be looking to order one!

10-15 minutes tops. The more you do it the easier it gets

How difficult is it to take the whole top off? Go completely naked? If there is a streak of sun in the forecast I'd love to take the doors off and the entire top. Is this tough to do with the Trektop? I have no problems taking it off and storing it in my garage....just don't know if it'll be a PITA eash time. Thanks for the help!

Now I have a new top with old quarter and rear windows. I'd be extremely pleased but now it looks like I pieced together a frame-less top from two different brands. Plus the light reflects different off the new stuff since it has a smoother feel to it.

I had the exact same channel pull out of the top and decided to fix it myself. It has stayed strong for a month and has not shown signs of wear.

That sucks! I wouldn't stand for it. Hopefully, if you've contacted Bestop they've agreed to make this right....

Update: Replacement is Here!!!
