I know this has been beat to death, but...

pt - is your jeep stock or have you lifted it? I have a 2010 sport with 17 inch rims and I'm looking to change the rims to aftermarket's with 4.5 backspacing. I'd like to go with 285/70/17 Duratracs. I know it'll be close, but from everything I'm reading, as far as on road goes, I shouldn't experience any rubbing. Is this correct?

DJL2 I'm HK on load ratings...here's my perspective:

I have up-armored HMMWVs (UAH) at work...lots of 'em. These babies weigh in excess of 13,000 lbs unloaded. Then we throw several hundred pounds of machine gun, ammunition, water and miscellaneous supplies in/on them.

My UAHs use E-rated tires - to describe that as "over-kill" for a 5000ish lb trail ready Jeep (a bit more than mine weighs at the moment) is something of a gross understatement.

HK_Runner Oh as far as tire ratings go...I try to stick with C. They ride the softest and are the best offroad. My new 35s will be C-rated. I may do a D with a 2-ply like a DuraTrac but would prefer not to. E is out of the question. They are more suited to heavy towing. I'd like to keep my teeth and spine aligned.

HK_Runner I have a 2012 Auto with 4.10 gearing. I am going from 32 KMs to 35 MTR Kevlars. I assume it will be noticeable but not too unbearable. If it is, I will regear to 4.56s or 4.88s but will wait and see. I do not like a very high-revving ride on the highway, but it will be one of those two.

I am sticking with 3-ply MTs or I would have tried the DuraTracs. I'll prob put the DuraTracs on my 4Runner the next time it needs tires. I like the DTs.

Thorshammer7 I'm running the 285/70/17's with the Teraflex leveling kit, 2" in the front 1" in the rear. Through advice I got here I went ahead and added 1-1/2" Spydertrax hub centric wheel spacers to eliminate any chance of rubbing. I dropped about 1 MPG as well. If you are sure you aren't going to want to go with bigger tires in the near future it is a great combination for a DD and to go and play around with. I am kicking myself in the ass right now for not going to 35"s. Just try and look down the road abit before you pull the trigger on the 285's.

MI JeepSkate just installed some 265-70-17 duratracs on a 13 at work (discount tire) the guy said the ride quality is more to his expectations over the SR/A's and his mpg hasnt budged a bit. now on the other hand, ive got 3.73's and i put on arctic take off's and i lost 1 mpg compared to stock SR/A's.

legitposter I moved from 7.5 inch stock wheels to 8 inch wheels, and from stock 255/75/17 to 285/70/17 (the fairly lightweight BFG A/T tires).

I can honestly say I'm surprised at how harsh the ride is. Bumps shake the vehicle badly. I tried airing down a little but it didn't help too much. Still, I think these look better, so I'd do it again.

My wife switched to the identical 8 inch wheels but kept her stock 255/75/17 tires. Her JK rides soooooo much smoother. It's a completely different experience. Sure, shes a 2door and I'm a 4door but I really think the tires are playing a huge difference.

As for MPG, mine seem to have dropped in my mind but my computer still hovers at 20.2mpg so, if there was a drop, it's nothing unbearable.

Like I said before I'd make the switch to 285/70/17 again if I had the chance.

EDIT: 17x9? Consider 17x8 if possible. Anytime you can limit wheel size you'll save some weight. Only go 17x9 if you're planning to put on really wide tires in the future.

how will 285/70-17 affect my Jeep

I have a 2010 2dr. my DD with stock 3.73 gearing with a automatic. I'm getting new rims 17x9, I was thinking about putting bigger tires 265/70-17. I really want to go up to 285/70-17 but wasn't sure how it will affect my gas mileage or performance. What would you recommend??
