New flash: YJ (most early AMC and Jeep) gauges are not very "accurate"... Though I'd be willing to bet that your gauge is reading just fine.
Now, you COULD do as BCDonny said and outfit your YJ with all mechanical gauges and then you would KNOW FOR A FACT that your gauges are getting proper readings.... But read on...
As a matter of fact - the YJ oil pressure gauge should not be at "40" at all times.
At idle a large majority of people experience somewhere around the "20" mark... At highway speeds (or while accelerating) you should see and increase in oil pressure. As long as your gauge is "working" and hasn't pegged in either direction and your engine doesn't seem to be doing anything too funky - I wouldn't be worried about it at all.
The "Rule of thumb" (beyond idle) is roughly 10 PSI for every 1000RPM.
"NEWER" Jeeps (and vehicles in general) use "dummy gauges" on both oil and coolant and will usually stay around the 50% mark no matter what (unless something is really, actually wrong), even though in all reality at idle it will be much lower.
"OLDER" Jeeps (and a lot of older vehicles)show "actual" values and the oil pressure gauge fluctuates with RPM. Though the year cut off for when they moved to the "dummy gauges" varied from model and car manufacturer... Though, to the extent of my knowledge, ALL YJs had gauges that read "actual" values...

Hey I gotta quick question for y'all. My jeep is full of oil but my oil pressure gauge say 20 it's not even to 40 is that strange?
