Hawkmeister Ok so we figured it out. I was indeed stuck in 4 HI. My brother and I figured it out the easy way, we got into some sand and goosed it. All 4 tires spun. The problem is that there was not enough throw to go all the way from 2 HI to 4 LO. After some very fine tuning and a little straightening on the linkage, we are able to get to all 2 and 4 wheel drive settings. He still does not think it is right and said he can modify the linkage, the arm or the shifter to increase the throw. Is there an adaptor, or a different TC linkage that is supposed to be installed when you put a lift on a Jeep? I am just wondering if there is something easy before I let him start cutting. He is a metal fabricator by trade and usually when he modifies something, it is better than the manufactured part.

Water Dog If they did a transfer case drop when they did the lift, the intermediate pivot point on the tc linkage may be binding and not letting you get the full range. You will likely have to crawl under it and watch as someone shifts it for you. I know when I first did mine I had to swap out the bolts that came with the linkage relocator to flathead bolts to get the linkage to clear.

Hawkmeister So I am back to the issue that I may only have one 4wd setting. I definitely hit Neutral just above where my TC shifter is now. In other words it basically goes: Engaged -> Neutral -> Engaged and that is it. If 4HI is just before Neutral and 4 Lo is just after it, those are all I can get to. I do hear and feel some clicks and such when turning. I have never had a vehicle with a lift before so it seemed normal to me. I will find out in the morning.

jeepwayoflife You would basically loosen that bolt and pull the shaft the bolt tighens against towards you as you look at this pic. I doubt you are in 4hi though. If you were every time you turned a corner you would get wheel hop or break something.

I am going to do this tomorrow. I have one more question. If it truly is stuck in 4HI, how do I get it to 2HI so I can put the lever all the way forward and re-tighten the bolt?

jeepwayoflife Yes, the linkage simply needs to be adjusted. You need to loosen the bolt circled red, make sure the TC is in 2wdHigh, push the actual lever inside the jeep almost all the way forward (just a tiny bit from the edge), then tighten the bolt again. This should solve the problem.


As far as the wheels moving in different directions, that just tells you if you have an open differential or LSD/Locker. You will have to watch the driveshafts to see if the TC is in 2wd or 4wd.

Hawkmeister Thank you for the responses. When I spun the front wheel, they spun in opposite directions. I was assuming that since I was in gear (Reverse) that the wheels would have been locked in place if I were in 4wd.

I was also thinking I might be stuck in 4Hi and maybe the linkage needs to be adjusted but when the wheels spun free, I kind of started thinking I was in 2wd. Neutral is just above whatever I am in now and then I hit what appears to be 4Lo. I know that it is 4Lo from the way it jumps. My Durango does the same thing.

To answer Offrd, the shifter does appear to be lifted just slightly. Definitely not parallel to the floor.

Water Dog As Lindel suggested, you can check your transfer case on the attached tag...probably an NP231..here's a pic of the tag

5spdftw You may just be getting it into 4Hi. 4Lo is to the right from neutral and down more I think with the stock Tcase. I'll look for a picture...

lindel My 99 has 2wd - 4 high - neutral - 4 low. I guess it's possible that someone could have swapped in a different transfer case, but I can't imagine one that only gives a choice of 4 low. If you can post a pic of the shifter and maybe the t-case, that might help.

There should be a round tag on the rear of the t-case that will tell you what it is, assuming it's the stock case.

I'd get a new lift on it pronto. GET RID of the blocks!

Just bought a 99 Wrangler Sport - 4wd question

I just bought a 1999 Wrangler TJ Sport. I thought I checked it out completely. After driving it for a few days and playing with it, I have noticed that I do only have one 4WD setting. My shifter seems to go from 2WD -> Neutral -> 4 LO. I thought maybe I was stuck in 4 HI and was not able to get to 2WD but I jacked up the front with it in gear and I can free-spin the front tires. Are there some TJ's that come with only one 4WD setting or has anyone heard of an aftermarket transfer case that I might have in this thing?

Looking for any suggestions. Jeep runs very well. I need to replace the lift. The front was done properly with new springs and shocks but someone just put blocks under the springs in the rear. I knew this going into the purchase. But, when you get it for 6K with only 57K miles, $800 for a new 4" lift is not too tough to swallow.
