robdizzle I know the coax isn't pinched as I took extra time and effort to lay it out nicely. Wasn't aware of testing the swr till I got to work. I work 2nd so now im at work and all i can think about is getting the heck out of here. Only about 5 hours left tick tick

You assumed correctly. I had a ground run to my antenna mount (mount was attached to tire carrier) and was getting crap for SWR. Frustrated, I took it to a pro CB shop, the guy told me "you are the 10th person with a Jeep that did this." Removed the ground, and all was well. I just wanted to make sure you didn't make the same mistake. You checked your SWR readings? Is your coax pinched?

robdizzle I did not specifically run a ground from the antenna to a spot on the frame. I was under the assumption that as long as I bolted the antenna mount to the back door of the jeep it would be fine. Guess this it what happens when you assume

Okay what I'm about to ask. Is not meant to imply anything... Could your CB be working... Just that nobody is actually talking on their CB??? Do you have somebody with a CB that could come over and actually see if it is working??? Weirder things have happened!

SilverSport 1) Run a ground wire from the antenna mount thru the tailgate to the body.
2) Tune your antenna with an SWR meter.

jeepers29 I had the same problem. I tried to mount my antenna to 2 different locations on bumper and tire carrier. Niether worked. Ended up going with a Teraflex tail light mount and all was good. I guess I was not getting a good ground thru the bumper.

The extra ground may help in the long run, I added a separate ground just to be sure; however, it will be a moot point until you get your SWR tested/adjusted. It is super easy if you can get a SWR meter, or like Chief stated, check around you local area, there should at least be a truck stop nearby that has a CB shop that will check your SWR.

Senior Chief If your SWR is way off you'll blow a final-output transistor. If there's a reputable CB shop close by they'll check your SWR for a small fee.

Silverton34 You are counting on the tailgate being properly grounded through the hinges. Try a temporary ground wire from the antenna to the engine block, that would rule out the ground issue.

robdizzle I ground the paint off where I connected the antenna and reused a factory bolt on the tailgate when I retightened it. Maybe I need try something different. Now I'll just be thinking about it all night long while at work.

Sinister6 No worries. SWR-The SWR meter or VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) meter measures the standing wave ratio in a transmission line. The meter can be used to indicate the degree of mismatch between a transmission line and its load (usually a radio antenna), or evaluate the effectiveness of impedance matching efforts.

You might be able to borrow one or Radio shack sell them for $40. The bars show you have power not necessarily signal. Check you have a good ground and wire didn't kink or get broken.

robdizzle I went through all connections and they are good. Brand new coax because I broke the end off my first one. Not sure how to test the swr meter just yet. Need to reread the manual but when I depress the mic switch I've got bars all the way across

Sinister6 If you STILL have power ie didn't blow fuse somewhere... Connections tight? Bad coax? What readings you getting through SWR Meter?

cb frustration. ideas??

I just installed a new cobra DX lV cb. Powers on, ran a p.a system into the engine bay. That works. I have zero communications through any of the channels. Routed all coax cable under the roll bar covers and mounted to the back door with aluminum mounting tab. Maybe my ground isn't good enough???
