Flint Eastwood The oil that came out smelled REAL bad!! hard to explain, but even a neighbor came over that has maintained a number of vintage cars and does his own mechanic repairs for many years made a comment, he smelled it from 50 years away!! The NoSpill quick drain was the right diameter but the wrong pitch thread, so the stock plug went back in. Over all, in approx. 50 years of changing oil in all kinds of rigs, including aircraft, this was by FAR the easiest!!! 5w30 Castrol Edge went in, along with a NAPA Gold (wix) filter. So far a conservative fuel economy improvement of at LEAST 20%, ya, no kidding!! Sounds better and is smoother too, noticeably by not a small amount! I don't think it has anything to do with the Castrol per se, but some good CLEAN synthetic oil..

Flint Eastwood Resurrecting the thread, I'm doing the first oil change on my 2014 JKUR at 700 miles. And installing a "No Spill" drain plug. I'll take pics and post them when I'm done.

craigwieck So I learned something new last night. I took apart a oil filter housing on a 3.6l and sure enough there is nothing to hold oil on there when the engine is off.

I also have pre-lubed all of my oil filters, that have been mounted vertically! But with the 3.6, them days are over..........
It doesn't appear that this engine has any kind of a ADBV, SAD....

not sure how you would do that without making a mess. Nothing going to hold the oil the filter housing on the 3.6L

With standard filter vehicles, I was always in the habit of putting a few ounces of oil in the filter before I put it on (as much as the filter would hold without spilling). This was a big deal on Ford 302's... My LX 5.0 had a cringeworthy knocking sound until the filter filled up. Getting a little in the filter ahead of time helped a lot!

craigwieck I will have to take a look when I do my first oil Change. I have done oil changes on tons of vehicles with cartridge style oil filters and have never seen one that goes dry on every start up. I could be wrong but with the majority of engine wear coming from start up I would find it hard to believe the filter housing drains when shut off.

This myth has already been debunked. The canister on the Pentastar has an inlet and outlet. When the engine is off and oil pressure reaches 0, the oil drains back out of the canister.

DJL2 Craig, what the heck? We're in the middle of a complete digression here and you're trying to bring things back on topic? Something of a party foul I'd say.

You're denying me to the opportunity to tell the Corvette guy that he ought to be driving a 911 GT2 or GT-R, for one thing. I cannot hound OD about his choice of beer, cellular telephone provider, grammar, etc. either.

craigwieck Engines with a cartridge style oil filter housing have a spring loaded drain valve in the bottom of the housing that holds the oil in the filter housing when the engine is not running. As soon as you remove the oil filter housing cap the filter comes up and the drain opens so the old oil will drain back into the oil pan. The reason manufactures recommend removing the cap first is to let the oil drain out of the filter housing. It has no affect on how the oil drains out of the pan.

Maybe the reason that I get so mixed up on this subject is that these synthetic things just aren't that important to me. At age 79, there are more important things like popcorn and Budweiser. In fact I think it's time for a can' or two, or more..............and of coarse some....

WOW, you lucky guy and or girl to have a Corvette. That was always one of my dreams, Oh well at age 79 it would be just to fast for me. At least if I wrecked it, I would have a Mobile 1 cell phone to call for help......

Now let's get back to real oil. If I was to use synthetics, which I am not, it would only be Pennzoil Platinum. SilverSport uses it so it has to be the best!!

it is a bummer that Mobil 1 does not meet Chrysler specs. I emailed Mobil 1 and they confirmed that at this time they do not meet the specs required by Chrysler.

13RBP I can end this debate, my Corvette uses only Mobile 1 and a Mobile 1 filter. It comes from the factory like that. Why? Because all elite car people know that the best racing engines and high performance motors use synthetic. That's what 60+ years of making the fastest American sports car teaches you.

Although I'm not saying regular oil changes with regular oil won't make your engine last a really long time, but I beat the crap out of my motors and it's Mobile 1 only for me. Doing mine at 500 for the record.

xzy As far as does the filter hold oil at shut off, I say no. After installing an oil pressure/temp gauge in my 3.6 it takes at least two seconds before pressure registers. If there were no drain back pressure should register almost instantly.

TOK Just looking at your profile pic... Is that where you changed the oil? Looks like you're on a hill and I'm wondering if some oil stayed in the pan.

I'm in a similar situation and have to point my pan drain downhill.

molson I've checked it before and it was always full. I pulled the filter and fill cap as well just in case there was any kind of vacuum holding oil in and let it drain for almost an hour so I doubt it's holding a full quart. I'll check it again before I drive it and probably ask the dealership about it the next time I'm over that way.
