SeVeReDiStOrTiOn You have pinion seal leak and you're replacing the bearing? Is the rear end howling or something? I'd just replace the seal if a leak is your only problem.

skyhawkap It was leaking on the front side behind the universal joint.

And it is a 35.

umake Where was it leaking? Could just be a bad RTV seal around the cover.

Was it the front or rear? The rear dana 35 plastic fill plug is notorious for leaking.

Differential leak help

First off... Thanks for all of the help so far! This is my first post however; many of you have helped me just by reading the responses to others.

I have a 97 TJ that I just got. I noticed today that the rear differential was leaking. I pulled the drive shaft and removed the seal. My question is with the shaft, seal and everything out... how much play if any should I have on the shaft. I'm trying to decide if I should and/or could replace the bearing (I think it is called the carrier bearing). I have the bearing but I'm not sure how I would go about removing the race of the old one or if I even should attempt.

Thanks!
