plan on spending a whole day doing the job.
and dont put synthetic lube back in the axles. Use Dino, it handles the shock load better.

|Sb5551||If it makes you feel better I am on 3.55's on 35's. I get about 160 miles to a tank.|
|05-07-2009 08:40 AM|
i have 3.73's and 32's and i feel lucky when i get 12mpg
didnt think putting a lift and 32's would have changed it that much.

|joemd60||I hope you decide to keep your jeep. My 04 with the 4.0 only averages 14 to 15 in the city. And I am sure I speak for most here that they are a lot of fun to own! and when people ask me why I keep it with such terrible gas mileage, I just smile and say " it's a jeep thing you wouldn't understand."|
|05-07-2009 03:52 AM|
|bpowa||i gave up on gas saving.. i get 14mpg.. i only keep the jeep for when the world comes to an end and people are stuck in traffic.. ill just crawl pass by; because i can..lol|

|Jerry Bransford||How many years do you think it would take to recoupe the cost of the typical $1100-1200 regearing cost with any possible realistic (minor) gasoline cost savings? More years than I think either of us would consider worth waiting for.|

|Sb5551||You can get thick cut gears if you go above the case break in the Dana's. They use the same carriers in the Rubicons that run 4.10's. They just use thick cut gears or rubicon gears depending on the vendor. The only differance when using the thick cut gears is one needs to drill and tap the holes in the carrier slightly larger. If you are running open carriers, a new carrier cost about 50$ not that much of an increase.|

|1HOTV2||I just re-geared from 3.07 to 4.10. You have to take into consideration that going from 3.07 to 4.56 or 4.88 will require a different carrier, which will add to the cost of the regear. However, the increase in responsiveness is well worth the cost. I re-geared for the power restoration, not gas milage. The MPG increase was just an added benefit!|

Alloy USA chromoly axles.... Kidding!
Please note: your speedometer is going to be way off, so you will need a 39 tooth gear which are semi-hard to come-by.. I am currently running a 36 tooth and I am about 5mph ahead and doesn't bother me that much.. Makes me think I am getting better gas mileage..
You can get away with just the Ring & Pinion, but an Overhaul kit is probably a good idea..
Gears: Northridge4x4 Jeep Parts: Gear Sets
Overhaul: Northridge4x4 Jeep Parts: Install & Overhaul Kits
By the way; I am pissed how much prices have come down since I did this in freaking JANUARY!!!!

|tough_jeep89||alrighty then i will do the regear. lucky for me my brother in law knows how to do gears so that should save me a lot of money. now could anybody give me a list of what i need to get for the regear??|
|05-06-2009 11:18 AM|
I went from 3.73s to 4.56s because I just didn't like driving it with the 3.73s.... At HWY speeds (65mph) the RPMs are at about 2400.. I guarantee I am getting better mileage because I don't have to use so much throttle to get her up and going.. SLF is correct; it is like driving a new Jeep with the gears.. I was initially worried about it, but I am very pleased with the result. With 4.56 gearing I can now start off in 2nd gear and I have the 5-speed NV3550.. Go with the regear, but I don't know if I would go 4.88 unless you plan on going with 35" tires in the future..

If you add up the cost of a beater (even if you get it free) you still have to buy insurance for it. You would be better off just buying the gas. The insurance will cost more than the gas you save.
I have several motorcycles. It always cracks me up when guys talk about the money they are saving on gas by riding the bike. As if the money that they spent for the bike, insurance, clothes, boots, and skid lid came out of a different bucket.
Trim a few bucks out of your budget from another place and just drive what you have.

|mxracer513||Beaters are nice to have sometimes. But depends on what you pay for that too, just like the gears, to be profitable. :\|

I am doing this with about 2hrs of sleep so might be a bit off.. but give you an idea anyway.
So lets look at this: Not sure your MPG now. but lets say its 14 mpg. use the plus 4mpg that makes new 18 mpg.
So using round numbers: TJ gas tank holds
20 gallons x 14= 280 miles per tank
20x 18= 360 miles per tank
difference of: 80 miles per tank more:
full tank @ $2.10 gal = $42 dollars
Fill up once a week: 1120 /1440 total miles base on old and new mpg
difference 320 miles more.. savings is about $37 per month or $444 a year or there abouts.. Cost of gear change is 1000-1500 so it would take you 2 to 3 years to start saving money on gas from the gear change.
Of course change the total number of miles mpg, etc and these figures will change a bit. Have you thought about just getting smaller tires for street driving? or a beater ricer to drive?

|KBR97||with those gears and tires you have Im not suprised you wanna get rid of it. You gotta regear it.|

|05-06-2009 01:24 AM|
|1BLKJP||With the 6 speed and 33's you could go to 4.88's and still be sittin pretty in 6th on the highway. You'll probably get 3 or 4 miles per gallon back at least.|

answer this could mean keeping my jeep
ok so i know that this has been asked alot but. i'm getting to the point that i don't know if i can keep my jeep if i keep having gas milage issues. i know that the jeep is'nt the best for mileage but right now it plain sucks. so my question is if i re-gear what can i expect to get for mileage. so here is what i got i have a 05 wrangler 6 speed with 33's and as it sits i have 3.07 gears. so what would be the ideal gear for me to get better gas mileage????
