groovebus Thanks for the heads up. The November run is basically a guys only recon of the area, before I even think about bringing the wife and daughters out there. I will be making another run in the spring with the family. Spring in the desert is awesome!

I did the Mojave Road in November a few years ago, and it was pretty cold and very windy. I was prepared for it, but it was too much for some others in our group who chose to bail after the first night. The scenery is more barren in November too. Spring time brings out all the flowers and a little more green land instead of brown.

530ktm Looks like another great trip. Strange feeling being out there in a Jeep and thinking of the people who traveled the same roads in something a lot less worthy.

Magichelmt cool trip. One day I hope to road trip out west. I had an "opportunity" aka got laid off years ago and I spent two and a half months cruising the eastern half of the US seeing friends and sights. Now with the jeep there are so many more places I want to see.

California Route 66 and Mojave Road

Here's a quick slideshow from an epic 4-day trip last weekend.

The first day was spent exploring a 110-mile stretch of Route 66 west to east across California, visiting a couple of craters, abandoned mines, ghost towns, and abandoned businesses and other structures. Early motorists used this historic road en route to California, seeking a new life.

The next three days were spent following a 140-mile path east to west through the middle of the vast Mojave National Preserve, visiting ruins, abandoned mines and other structures. This historic path was used by early settlers on horse and wagon, and before that as a trade route by Native Americans. Since this is a National Preserve, they say the natural scenery looks much like it did hundreds of years ago. This segment of the trip included two nights of primitive camping.

Here you go.
