that sounds exactly like my rig drives on 95.question for you though. You said yours runs at 70-75 on flat ground 85 on decline what gear are you in when your running that speed because I have found that I have to be in fourth to keep that speed but my rpms are a little over 3000. In 5th gear I knida level out at 65 ish

|AirWick||If only I knew better when I first bought my Jeep in '08, I would've bought a 4.0. So with that said, i'm driving a 2.5L and I still wished I had bought a 4.0 but i've grown so much to my jeep that i've accepted it. I recently went to a GY Duratrac 33" tires and 4.10 gear and was worried about driving too slow on I-95 but surprisingly, my girl did not do bad at all. 70ish-75mph on flat highway, up to 85 mph on a decline. And she kept up with traffic.|

Let me write once again that 2.4 is not a 2.5
We're talking about off road rigs here and gearing is everything.
I'd keep my 2.4(4.56)comparing to ANY 4.0(3.07)...
I live on a full of mountains island and i don;t have to step on the gas.
3000rpm isn't exactly flooring,right?

|dredg009||I'm sorry but you just can't squeeze that much more hp out of these motors without dumping tons of money and changing internals and the gains wont be enough for the cost. Maybe stroking a 4.0 but that gets costly quick|

|dredg009||Truly it's not bad I'm sure 4.10 would be better or even 3.73 but I have no problem on entrance ramps or passing like the 03 se I test drove. It was best left on the trail in my opinion. It was scary trying to merge in 4th with the pedal to the mat|

|dredg009||I have to shift down on the freeway almost every hill to not drop 5-10 mph and takeoff is only a little slower but I got a 5 speed so that makes up for it. I haven't lost any mpg though from going from 235/75/15 to 31/1050/15. maybe a little better cause I can't gun it as much as I used to lol. Duratracs =gnarly.|

|dredg009||If you can get the 4.0 it's a no brainer. But if I would have found a better deal on a 4cyl I would have made do with it. I do believe the 2.4 tjs are usually more beat up cause you have to drive it like your running from the police just to keep up with traffic. But I test drove a 4 banger drove about 4 miles and brought it back and walked away.|

Jeepster is right for the most part. Either motor is great but he is dead on about the acceleration on the highway. With 2.5, u will have to downshift to take off, the 4.0 will just go. Gas mileage is better on 2.5. I get 19-20 mpg using 4.11 and 31's.
I don't have to floor it using 31's w 4.11 gears. My acceleration is fine off the line. I don't have anyone flying by me unless it's some douche flooring his camaro and trying to get a ticket

well in my opinion
my first jeep 98 2.5 was pretty good power was good fuel economy for me was 19-22 with 31´s 5 spd the only mods was 8mm cables high flow catback and CAI.
and some day ago i bought my first 4.0 she is a 06 rubi 6spd all stock
the power is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT i dont need to down shift at all my pedal is not always touching the floor like my 2.5 was xD
mmmm did i told you that this beauty can actually do a burnout? well it can!!!!!! even if i dont try it hahahahahaha so much power im so happy with the 4.0 and i think it isnt so bad on my fuel because im not using all the pedal =D.
im telling you believe in me 2.5 is awesome so as the 2.4 but they are slow and weak.
advantage of the 2.4 less sparks, more space under the hood, fuel economy maybe 1-2 more mpg, you will never break axels or driveshafts THEY DONT HAVE THE TORQUE TO DO THAT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA just a joke but its kinda true they can break of course. but offroad you are going to do almost everything like the 4.0
disadvantages slow and i mean 0-60 in 8.2 years, you cant haul well you can but not very heavy, almost no torque, maybe more engine wear because you need more rpms to keep up with other vehicles
4.0 advantages. more power and torque 0-60 8.5-9.0s all the power you will ever need, 4.0 is very reliable and it last over 300k miles or more.
disadvantages. more sparks, slightly worst mpg i think.
