h2otoo I never put my sports car in 4x4. I'm confused. Now, my pick-up. You know, the one that the tires will just spin on wet pavement from a stop. Well if I stop at a light on a good incline (got one like that down the street from here) I put it in "Auto 4wd", or if I got to merge with traffic on the quick. If I had 4x4 in the v-12 Jag I would have used it, tires spun way too easy in the rain.

stevens243 You started it Rob. Just couldn't let the guy make his "comment" without "moderating" could you? That's what you get for putting "moderate" into "moderating".

Plus, I can't believe you'd let the OP speed in 4HI on the freeway like that. Jeez.

Ah, we all wish we were as smart and cool as that guy. Too bad none of us but him "answered the question at hand".

In case you're curious, there's only one person in this thread acting like a childish dick.

I bet you find that over half the jeeps you see will be doing so!
So, were you referring to me? My name's John, not Jason (the OP).

stevens243 Why would you draw the conclusion from the poster's question that he is speeding?

Why would you take an informal poll of speeding jeepers and automatically imply that this person is in the "guilty" group?

Bird Dog Never in the rain.
4WD in Snow if it's old and packed/tracked.
In new snow 4" or less I use 2WD.
4 WD At the boat ramp so I dont tear up the grass and dirt.
Off road were it is steep, muddy or a large drop off along the edge.
2WD if conditions are dry, flat or not really steep.
4WD on the beach and sometimes 2WD ...depends what I'm doing.

stevens243 No reason (maintainance wise) to run 4x4 on your jeep as unless you remove your front driveshaft or put in some hubs everything is always turning. You are just not applying poswer to the front. So everything is getting moved/lubed while you are just driving around.

For my Toyota Sequoia, once a month.

For my Jeep, I've looked in the manual and it seems to only say when not to engage it (dry pavement) I can't remember reading any "engage 4wd" schedule.

Does it say in your Owners Manual? I don't worry about it on my TJ in 4WD every weekend.

My Toyota pick-up (owners manual) said to engage 4hi for at least 100 miles per month I know its not the same for your jeep, but I'm just saying it was covered in the OM.

You call that snow in south Jersey?....

The inch or two you do get is gone by the afternoon.

Contra i don't drive my jeep in the rain, that is what i use my main truck for, but if it were my DD i would use 4x4 only if i drive less than 30mph in rain
it doesn't ice up down here much...

05GT-O.C.D. In NE OH we get heavy lake effect snow, so I run it often when dealing w/ that. Very rarely I'll run it in a heavy rain on an interstate when there's ponding. The truth is, during those times the smart thing to do would be to slow down b/c I'm probably driving too fast for the conditions anyways.
05-06-2009 04:07 PM
MouthfulOfGrass Maybe, if it's raining hard enough, where there's dirt/mud/debris on the road along with a LOT of water to make traction dicey. Otherwise not in rain. Only off road, only where it's needed. Just because I'm on a dirt road, doesn't mean I should have it in 4 wheel drive.
05-06-2009 03:23 PM
thaduke2003 I only run it if there's snow covering the road or icy conditions. Otherwise, MAYBE on dirt/mud- only if I'm going slow enough to where I might get stuck- Mark W.
05-06-2009 03:22 PM
mr4x4 I only run 4wheel drive when I'm wheeling never need it on the pavment or on the dirt roads (sceinic trails)
