OhSixTJ Mine grinds a little going into 4Lo and doesn't seem as fluid as it should during the shift. An adjustment would change this? If so, any specifics on how to adjust? Like, should I shorten the linkage

valgerth I use a similar method to toomantim, just put it in neutral at a stop and try to shift it, if it doesn't go, I put it in drive, roll a foot or two, and try again. Never had it not line up after a try or two.

toolmantim find a slight decline/incline and apply brake and trans in N so your not moving.
pull lever into 4L....if it does not want to engage fully (meaning all the way back) then let off your brake (keep clutch in) to allow your wheels to roll just enough until you feel it engage. you can pull lever when it's rolling to help ease the gears in.

if it still grinds when you let off clutch then you have a linkage adjustment issue.

JFjeld Engaging 4L from a stop has always resulted in grinding for me. I always engage 4L by doing the following (assuming you're already in 4-Hi):
  • Get your Jeep rolling 2-3 mph
  • Slip your transmission in Neutral
  • With your Jeep still slightly rolling, quickly move the transfercase lever through neutral to 4L
  • Slip your transmission into gear

The above has always worked for me, and I read somewhere that engaging with the vehicle slightly rolling always helps. No grinding.

idiot magnet Sounds like linkage is not moving the lever far enough to engage. Check into adjusting that rod. Loosen one bolt on the top slide the rod/linkage and retighten is all it takes normally. Pretty simple adjustment.

The manual is almost useless. I've tried rolling in neutral, as well as idling in neutral. I've also tried moving in drive as well as idling in drive. Nothing but grinding. When I bought the truck back in August, the guy put it in both positions to show me that it worked properly. I don't know, I'll probably never use it. But I over paid a bit, so it would be nice to know it works.

Kota7x You can engage it in a crawl (2-3MPH) but to add to the poster above me. Pull up quickly on the lever to get it into 4L. Don't try and slowly go through the gears.

idiot magnet You need to have it stopped completely in order to get it into 4L. I have it in neutral. Do not try to get it into 4L when you are moving!!!
Your linkage may need adjusting as well if you have that much trouble getting into 4L.
Get under there and see if it's binding on anything while someone is trying to shift it.
Check your manual as well.

4x4 engagement

Hey guys. Can someone please tell me, or point me to a previous thread on how exactly to properly engage the 4-wheel low setting. No matter what I do, it grinds.

To go 4-hi I just drive and pull it up to the first notch. That works fine. But I can't pull any further without grinding. The only way I can get it into neutral then low is to stop the engine.
