Jeeps are notorious for their durability. Just go through the suspension, steering, driveline, all the fluids and do with it what you please once it checks out fit for duty. My XJ had 29XXXX miles when I first took it on a run through the mountains. It was mechanically sound and only had minor overheating problems.

Don't be upset when something finally does give out.

I might have read it wrong, but there is a electric like green pearl jeeps.

That's a pretty high price. I got my 99 with 81k on it for $7200 last year (private sale). It was in excellent condition with documented maintenance records.

jordorunway Bought my 2000 TJ Sahara last summer for $10k, 143k. It was bone stock. One owner, and street driven only lol. Also at the time it was the only jeep in the area for sale that had a hard top and i knew i wanted a hardtop for the winter. Also, it was the cheapest in the area as well. In all my time of looking for a jeep in my area they EXPENSIVE. I still have yet to see one around here worth buying that is under $10k. Usually if their under that their beat to crap.

So far the only thing i've done to mine is a oil change, and new wheels and tires. 147k now. Runs great

Day i brought it home.

jimwww As my dealer says when I bought it.. rust is the issue. I have zero rust on mine because of where I live (vancouver BC) and so he thought that all you have to do when you have a nice tj without rust is replace parts. Rare to find a Tj here in vancouver under 7000.00 (with 6cyl)

I guess value is how you assign it. My Tj doesn't look or drive any different than when I owned a 99 Tj in 2000. My 2001 Tj does need shocks but you would never know it was that old.. it has 307,000km on it.

exavid When it comes down to it a vehicle is worth whatever a buyer will pay for it. The value to the buyer is composed of his desire to have the item and how much money he has to spend. A wealthy man will pay more for a given item than one with less money because he can indulge his desires more. So if you really want something and can afford it you'll pay what you can afford. If you buy a high mileage vehicle you should consider whether you have enough additional funds to repair whatever it might need.
I paid more for my '01 TJ than the normal amount for it's year and mileage. I did so because I'd looked at quite a few and this one was a standout in appearance and condition. To me it was worth a couple thousand more than it might have been to someone else. I can also afford to replace whatever the Jeep needs during the time I'll own it. In my earlier, less affluent years, I wouldn't have paid as much for it. I spent a lot of years driving pretty tired cars but now don't have to. So it's as much your amount of money you can afford as the condition and year of the car. The 'right price' is different for each buyer.

Achilles515 I basically stole mine. I got it last August, '99 TJ 4.0 with 90k on it for $5300. Needed tires and rims but haven't had any major issues. Put a new exhaust on it and a new starter, that'd be it. It was in GREAT shape too.

volswagn For me, reliability has become more and more important. We bought an Acura TSX SportWagon last year for the reason you mention - I hope to take it 200K miles with no issues (I am religious about maintenance). I bought a 2003 Subaru Forester XS Premium new and gave it to my stepson when he graduated from high school. It has 163K on it now and has only needed wear items (shocks, brakes, etc). Of course, we were religious with maintenance on that one too.

It pays to buy brands with good reliability records.

As for Jeeps, I'd have to really think about buying a brand new Jeep right now. I view Jeeps the same way I viewed Saabs for so many years -- there are "good" ones and "bad" ones. The only way you can be sure to get a good one is to buy one a few years old at least, that has only had one owner and has been well maintained. If someone gets a semi-lemon, they're going to ditch it as soon as possible. Generally speaking, I think that's how you see some Wranglers with four and five owners before they turn 100K. On the other hand, if you see a Jeep with 100K on it and only one owner, chances are that's one of the "good" ones.

I bought my one-owner 2002 Wrangler almost a year ago with 100K on it. Wednesday was the first day it didn't start. The original starter failed. Otherwise, it just runs. Every day. I think it was one of the good ones.

I had a Toyota Camry that was a POS.. absolutely a nightmare...

And I don't know about you, but I wouldn't suspect someone on .. oh.. "WRANGLERFORUM.COM" was looking for any old 4x4...

Sorry dude, but a compact pickup truck and a Jeep are not at all the same kind of vehicle. A jeep is a jeep.

Honestly, if you're the kind of person that is bothered by the rough ride, find the lack of power windows and mirrors distasteful, or don't change your own oil... I wouldn't recommend a Jeep anyway...

Bassplunker I bought my 2005 Wrangler (4cyl. 6 speed) new out the door for 16k (after getting a lemon F-150 4x4 and then having a Chevy Jimmy trans die after 90k miles and promising myself I'd never buy anything again except a Toyota (I love my 2001 Tundra) or a Honda (My wife's Acura had 200k miles with only maintenance, and a clutch). Well, Chrysler bought my Jeep back as a lemon and I got to drive it for 5 years for about $500. If you want a 4x4, buy a little Tacoma 4x4 used. Seriously. Sorry dudes, but if you disagree, look at Jeep reliability stats.

Sold my 2002 TJ a year ago with 160k on it. It was in fantastic condition, I just simply wanted a 2012 JKU.

My 03 Jeep Wrangler currently has 412K...changed first trans last month, two alternators, three batteries and lots of tires. Engine still runs strong. Since 100K have used Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and Lucas oil treatment. For tires check out Treadwright.com...high quality 4x4 re-treads.

BreckenridgeYJ I'm pleased to have 2 amazing motors.... The 4.0 jeep and the 4.4 v8 BMW in my Range Rover....... But the Rover is costing me jeep parts! I have to replace the tires not cheap.... 285/40/22's. and the front air struts . Too bad I love it and insist on 2 vehicles.

The 4.0L is the last of the Rambler (American Motors) engines. One of the best motors ever built. I have send them go over 300,000+ miles with no problems if maintained.

Hi,
I bought my 2000 Jeep Wrangler 2 years ago with 134,000 miles on it. It was well cared for and I have had no problems with it. Change the oil and go at it.

I thought so, only issue for me was that the guy who sold it to me claimed it was certified (had papers to back that up) but after I had my personal mechanic look it over, it was not properly certified. (Had to change the rotors, brakes, and the rear dana 44 seal).

Even contacted the Ministry of Transportation (I'm Canadian) to see if his mechanic was pulling a quick one and the official said unfortunately the issues where too borderline to do anything about... SO I basically sucked it up, paid my 600$ and no issues since. My problem was that I had to travel 6 hours to get my Jeep (as everything local to me was either rusted to hell or abused too much from offroading) and when your not in an area you know, its hard to get some other mechanic on the fly who you do not know to do the check up to see if it was worth the purchase. I gambled and paid the price which wasnt too bad and could of been alot worse.

This seems a little to good to be true in my own opinion. There is no way you can find a 2010 with 48k miles for only 12k. Even 2007's with 50k miles go for about 17k or more depending on condition. Just my $0.02.

That is a good deal. I bought my 2002 TJ Sport (one owner) with 103K on it for $10K. 4.0L, 5-speed, hardtop, Dana44. Owner had just replaced clutch, a couple seals, etc. Didn't think I overpaid, but looking at that, I might have. Got 113K on it now almost a year later and it has been the most reliable, trouble-free transportation I have ever owned. Of course, like everyone else, I have a list a mile long of things I want to do to it.

Congrats on your new purchase.
I would not pay too much attention to all the spectacular deals mentioned. They are out there every once in a while.
Those that got them come out of the woodwork whenever prices are discussed!

You did not get taken.... and a southern Jeep is worth some extra money... they last longer and are easier to work on due to min rust and no corrosion..

And what's a few extra dollars where "love" is concerned.

2002 tj

Bought my 2002 TJ soft top three years ago for $7700 cash. It is an Arizona car, very clean with 113,800 miles. Found it on Craig's List. Have had a few minor problems, EVAP codes, LDP changed, gas cap, etc.

LomanGT Bought a bone stock 2000 2.5L for $4,000. Front tires are worn and there are the usual minor dings and surface rust for a 12 year old vehicle, but it has been rock solid for six months now.

I hate to say it, but look around for a couple that is getting married or having a baby. The toy often has to go and in their hurry, the couple may just run it over to CarMax. Be ready with the cash. CarMax offered my buddy $4K. I offered him $4k and visitation rights any time he wanted. It Blue Booked at $7,600 but they just did not have the time to dink around with Ebay and tire kickers coming over and just wanting to shoot the shit about Jeeps.

So find a Jeep you like and fix the dude up with a chick and wait for it to fall in your lap.

dave twombly By all means have it inspected by some one you trust. Better to pay 100 dollars then thousands later. Unless it is what you are going to upgrade or add by your self, Get under it and in the tough to get to places and check for heavy rust. I wish you well and many fun miles.

askmaxim I am the first owner of my 2000' TJ Sport 4l desert sand ex/camel interior, the jeep.com poster boy for the year 99, now having 125000 miles. 4 snowless winters in warmer climates, the rest are snow and frost up to -25C (-10F). A few times of brief mud offroading.

Still think of it as 'new'. Changed the water pump and, strangely, the radiator a few times for a clogging problem that could not be diagnosed yet (when one half of the radiator stays cold - no circulation - while the system goes boiling). otherwise it's just the linkage and the front wheel cardan joints. Shocks are still original except the steering damper. Third battery, the third set of tires and spark plugs, 4 or more front brake rotors and pads. Funny - the heater fan regulator switch broke up recently, now the 3-switch climate panel is replaced.

BTW I have a 98 TJ with 220K Pulled the engine apart just because and found that the cylinder walls still had cross hatch marks. Replaced the bearings and machined the head.

Just watch the frames by the rear control arm mounts.
