|Ryken01||I also have no Idea where to go to talk to people about my jeep problems|

|Ryken01||A spring over is an awesome poor mans lift. I did a spring over with 2 inch bds lift springs and 2 inch body lift. I also have tera flex revolver and z box spring shackles. almost all came with the jeep lol. I'm a newbie who also has questions about oil coming out of disrtibuter on a 2.5 4 cylinder.|

But I had 31x10.5s on my old stock springs but here is a before and after of my setup I have a 2.5 rough country lift with 1 inch rough country shackles|

|TipperD||Wow that is pretty....way back in the day....like 1975 or so I had the use of my uncle's 1960 Willy's....and also owned a 1970 Willy's pick up for a time.....never got into the car thing really til now.....got out of large sailboats ans airplanes....at the stage where all the toys have to live in the backyard!|

|Tarby||I've had my Rio for 10 years now...I had the 31's on it up until a year and a half ago. The only reason I lifted it a little more and went to 33's was because I got rid of my CJ5 trail rig to get a JK for my wife (although, she cried when I traded my CJ)...her TJ was a money bucket and she never liked it from the moment I brought it home. Now, she is happy...so that means everyone is happy...lol!! Here was the last pic I took of my old CJ...[IMG][/IMG]|

Tarby that is a great looking Jeep...gives me something to aspire to.... will keep mine it at 31".
Thanks to all you that responded, I learned a lot. Will definitely be doing springs, shocks and shackles later this summer. Something not right as there is a sharp metal sound coming from one of the rear springs, sometimes it sits level and sometimes it is down in the back. I will only do this once as ultimate goal is to tow behind my Safari Trek MH and once I have it lifted will need to set up tow bar level to MH...

Zone Offroad also makes a good set of 1" lift boomerang shackles for a decent price. I have them on my 95 Rio Grand in conjunction with a BDS 2" lift and it rides wonderfully. Great as a dd or offroad.
I would replace those stock springs with something. I really wouldn't do an add-a-leaf judging by the condition my stock springs were in.

|Siffo3012||With regard to shackles: make sure you don't overtighten!!!!! I was even warned and I over tightened... Those shackle bolts have to allow the shackles to move so the spring flexes... My jeep rode like a 400 lbs hooker until I figured out my shackles weren't moving. I loosened them and now she only rides like a 200 lbs hooker...|

No other mods needed...In Pennsylvania, it is illegal to run without flares covering the wheels...stock are fine and no rub with alot of flex with the 31's.
Also, if you want to upgrade later, you can do a 1 inch body lift, extend brake lines, use flat fender flares and throw on some 33's, and it will come out like this...as mine sits now...and no rub...[IMG][/IMG]

As bone stock as could be sitting on 31's. No rub anywhere at all

|TipperD||That looks great.....seems like it is the answer, did you have to any other mods to the drive train?...like the fender flares too...|

|Tarby||Here is what mine looked like when I had 31 inch tires, RE 2.5 lift with 1 inch over stock shackles (from RE). Plenty of clearance and nice ride.[IMG][/IMG]|

|beardown||those shackles are def stock!!! ome greasables are the best! 110$ though, as far as a 2.5 inch at least,,,|

|TipperD||Thanks so much for the great input...gotta love forum for this!....There are a few broken ends on those U bolts as well.....I want to correct all this, I am not looking for extreme off road, want a better ride-- it's rough now....I know it's a Jeep, but the springs make noise and I know it is not 100%. In reading and trying to learn as much as possible here it seems I can do a 2.5...would lean towards the RE standard ... new shackles, but also would consider the Black Diamond 1.5,,,,any thoughts on this?.....As the tires are at about 80% no point in not keeping them and continuing with 31".|

If your into doing this on a budget, you can go with extended long shackles (they use to be fairly cheap $$$), I never liked mine due to interfering with approach angles (shackles hitting stuff first before I could get up and over the obstacle) as I live in AZ and rocks get in the way out here. I believe I read you were using this as a beach jeep, which shackles shouldn't be a big problem cruising in sand. Basic rule for lift height when adding long shackles is that you gain half the height of the shackle..ie...4" inch shackle should give you about 2" of lift.
If you got some cash to put into it go with one of the MFG's 2.5" kits, there is an abundance of types and designs which will fit you applications...One good thing is you already have the TC drop installed, you will need it once you go over about 2" in lift.
Hope that helps a little..

|roadyrob||crown makes a nice set of boomerang shackles at a reasonable price, you can find them on ebay or crt performance.|

|TipperD||Any suggestions on which shackles to use if I do the 2.5 RE lift? It seems there is so much choice in all of this.|

|roadyrob||looks like a well worn lift of some kind. that last pic isn't a stock spring. 2nd to last pic looks like greaseable bolts.|

|tigerblood||haha, thats the first ive ever seen someone cut and shorten a stock shackle. I think you hit the nail on the head with it needing new suspension.|
|05-02-2013 05:01 PM|
Pics of shackles
here are the front and rear shackles...are they stock too?
This jeep was salvage as the rear door was hit and back window broken...maybe the PO was in the process of a lift when he lost it. Or maybe he just went as far as the tires and rims. In any case it needs new suspension.

|Gothere||I have a 95 YJ, initally I put on 31's with no issue, then added about 3' to the lift for 32's. I then got a bad driveline vibe and did a cheap quick TC drop like the one here, my guess is the prior owner had a small lift (extended shackles..or..?) and did the TC drop, when he sold it he might have pulled the lift but left the TC drop....Just a wild guess. All the other components look like they are stock. When you do the 2.5 lift, you at least will be good for the TC drop though.|

|beardown||it looks to me that it's all stock other thn tires and wheels... I have a formula to figure out lift but I will have to dig it up... I thought that 31s can still avoid rubbing, but 32s will, 2.5 inch lift with ome all the way around is what I did with 32s and noticed a lot more thn I expected! not the cheapest route,, I also think that above 33s with 2.5 lift you have to look in to messing with gear ratios,,,, which I want no part of with a daily driver,,|

|tigerblood||RE 2.5 would be a great choice|
