|Scout||I've laid my Jeep almost over and the only thing keeping it from flipping were the tube fenders. They made it out with only a scratch but no structural damage. I've also run them up against several trees without any damage. These are all situations where OEM fenders would have been toast.|

They are built like armor, but do they need to be? How many time have you hit them on rocks or trees? They aren't truly structural unless you tie them into the frame or bumper somehow. So for the most part they are heavy overbuilt fenders with better tire clearance.

Lightweight Tube Fenders
I've been kicking around ideas in my head. I want tube fenders but have heard of them bending the radiator support and door frame/hinges because of being so rigid. Is this even a big problem at all. If they were made of a lighter material that would fail before any damage was done would it be better? Maybe aluminum tubing or a light weight steel tubing. Something that could be replaced easily and cheaply at home. Both aluminum and light gauge steel could be bent easily without special/expensive bending equipment.
