YJ fanatic WeekenderATX, don't waste your money on the D35. Save the money and buy an 8.8 with limited slip for ~$200. The swap is easy, and its a way better axle.

WeekenderATX Aussie in front is sounding better and better. For my D35 rear, I'm leaning toward LSD (maybe Eaton Detroit TrueTrac), rather than locker, for on-road manners.

brachilius I ran Detroit ez lockers in my 91 2.5l. The rear ez locker was done in about 18 months. I rounded off the teeth. I replaced it with a lock rite. It lasted for years. It was in a Dana 35. I live in PA and we get some good snows. I never had any trouble. I would just drive cautiously. If you have the money, get a selectable rear locker. To do it once...swap in an 8.8. It is a waste of money to buy an ard or elocker for the 35. I have about $750 into my 8.8 swap. That's a 4.10 axle, ruff stuff install kit, auburn elocker and install kit. Total swap cost will be $850 once I buy the ebrake cables and ujoint flange. That is less than an arb for a 35. I did not include brake parts in the expense as my 8.8 had good brakes.

YJ fanatic Yes, I still have the stock axle and vacuum system. The short left shaft still spins, which will spin the gears and since its locked, it will spin the driveshaft. This shouldn't create any problems though. YJ front shafts aren't balanced from the factory, but most of them I've seen are good enough and don't cause vibrations.

My only problem was that I bent my driveshaft last year, so I went and bought a YJ shaft that someone had balanced.

So do you still have a stock axle other than the locker?
The reason I ask is I have a Lock-Rite in my stock front axle, which like you said off road its awesome, and although while in 2H the split axle disengages, it still makes the front drive shaft spin and thus creating heat and drag, this is the new normal right?

YJ fanatic Yup, its in the front. Totally invisible in 2wd. I've never heard it click or pop, but you know its there in 4wd. It works very well.

WeekenderATX Started pricing today.
For my 27 spline front Dana 30, pricing for the Powertrax No-Slip (Part # PTX9204302700) is right around $450.
Ouch. That's a lot more than I thought.
I've read several reviews that say it's 99% invisible in the front, though.
Hmmm.
Thoughts?

I would disagree with you about the D35 not holding up to a locker...I ran a Loc-Right for over 10 years in my D35 after I bought the YJ new in 95 I threw one in, had no problems for a decade, also had the gears changed in 97 to 4/56 which put more force on the axle, that worried me a little, still no problem.

If your on a budget and can't throw money at your rig, then a lunch box locker in the rear on a D35 will work and make your jeep more trail worthy, that is a fact, I did it for over 10 years no breakage, and a bunch of trips to Moab, for trails like poison spider, hells revenge etc...

Now if your planning to throw 38" tires on and go full throttle to get up a hill or when you get stuck, your going to break things...IMHO anyway...

True enough, you hear alot about just throwing in a lunch box locker, but if you do have an LSD in the diff you will have to get the right locker to fit or replace the diff...

I have to say that I have the 8.8 LSD rear and a locked front with a Spartan. The rear is awesome. Both tires always turn. I have spun the tires in softer dirt and dug myself in before, and both tires dug equal size holes. The road matters are awesome. I cant tell the difference on pavement between that and the open Dana 35 I replaced, with the exception of some extra tire wear.

The locked front is nice, and awesome offroad, but I try to avoid turning the wheel all the way on pavemwnt. That isnt always possible for me since I live in the city. It still bangs pretty loudly making tighter turns up front on pavment, and sometimes coming out of a turn hitting the gas it pulls to one side for a second. It also might have to do with the fact I swapped in a solid axle to gain the benefit of the greasable outer seals. I wish the front performed as well as the rear. I will just need to get a selectable locker up front eventually. For now it does everything I want it to though.

One thing to note though is that in snow LSD and a locked front are not good at all. Good way to wreck. With a selectable being able to drive in 4WD with open diffs is the best, at least where I live. If you go sideways here you will hit something or get hit by something.

Perfect plan IMHO. The front D30 can handle a locker no problem, not so with the weak rear 35. Also a full locker rear on the street when it rains or gets icy is scary, especially going up a hill where you end up moving sideways. A gear driven LSD in the rear is much nicer on the road and still helps off-road while locking the front will pull you over most obstacles.

P.S. Actually "perfect" would be a selectable front and rear like ARB if you have the money to throw at it.....I don't

Not completely true. It depends on the axle there are a few lunch boxes out there for LSD carrier applications. Like the lsd carrier lock right for the 8.8.

Yes, I had to remove it too. I replaced all the ring bolts as recommended . Cost about $25 or so from Summit.

GoldenSahara00 Biggest issues I had with mine were getting the shafts out because they had been in there so long, and the fact that the bolt holding my cross pin in broke...

YJ fanatic It's fairly easy. It took me and 2 friends 2.5 hours to do it, and we replaced the u-joints too. Any questions, just ask.

GoldenSahara00 No c clips. We're here if you run into trouble. I did mine and taught myself. follow directions, read them a few times before you jump in.

jeremyx28 I wish I knew some local jeepers, or someone who could supervise/help with the job. I can follow directions and I read that the spartan comes with very detailed instructions. It shouldn't be too hard. Thanks again everyone for the help.

YJ fanatic My 92 YJ did not have c-clips. Didn't even have the channel on the shaft for one. But I would say that pulling the axles and carrier would be 100x easier than trying to get everything positioned with them all still in.

Also, the test does work in 2wd. Mine does at least.

GoldenSahara00 I edited my last post a little. From my knowledge what I told you is correct. Try it in 2wd. If only 1 tire turns, then you need 4wd This is for the front. As far as the install, I would take the carrier out, it's just easier.
