Noises are weird on jeeps. If your center pin was broke the spider gears would bind enough to tell you to stop driving.
What kind of control arms do ya have? I would confirm the bushings are good there. And check the engine and tranny mounts.
I thought my front locker was taking a crap. swore up and down the noise was coming from the front. Turned out the rear backlash was at .012

D44 ARB question
I'm curious if its possible in anyone's experience here to determine if an arb cross pin is busted without pulling the carrier itself from the vehicle. Due to condo association rules fully dismantling the rear end probably wouldn't go over too well.
When I shift the vehicle primarily at lower speeds, there is a loud clunk that comes from the rear diff when engaging the gear and letting off the clutch. This happens both engaged and open (though much worse open). I've checked over the driveline which is all nice and tight, and a friend checked the ring and pinion backlash. They were confident the problem was inside the locker. Unfortunately it is a previous generation locker and there is very limited support for replacement parts. I'm trying to determine what the problem is so I have a better idea of what needs to be replaced. I have people that can help and primarily have the garage space to allow for the repair but are all 2-3 hours away making the logistics of this pretty difficult.
So the question is is there any way to determine if the cross pin (which is arb tech supports 1st guess) without pulling the entire carrier
