Zwack-n-Irish Hi. Native Oregonian, here. Central Oregon Coast. Born and raised in the Coast Range (St. Helens, then Vernonia), spent 20 years in NE Oregon in the Grande Ronde Valley, then 13 years in Portland, before moving here to Lincoln City 2 years ago.

Some of my very fondest memories are of going to the Jeep Races in Starkey with my mother, (step)father, and siblings. Drag races (1/4 mile) on a packed dirt track, and mud bog races right next to the drag strip. My (step)dad bought and built old Jeeps (CJs and Willys). He'd work on and race one for a few years until it was a consistent winner, then he'd sell it and buy a new one to work on. His last one, "The Bad Example" (with appropriate custom paint job :-) ), is a Willys. My niece inherited it upon his death 3 Christmases ago, so it has stayed in the family. Those happy times in my 20s and early 30s are when I learned to love Jeeps. I must say, I'm happy to see so many fellow Oregonians, here. I have to wonder if any of you ever attended those races in Starkey, way back (I have no clue if they're even still held--my dad stopped racing when my mother told him that the hobby was too expensive to continue)?

Anyway, I'm glad I found this forum, and this sub-group :-).

Thanks guys! We went out there for the first time last weekend. At first we couldn't find anything but boring gravel trails, and were just about to give up on the place when we finally found something fun Cannot wait to get back out there!

Fall Colors Cruise (Saturday October 25, 2014)

Saturday October 25, 2014
Gather at: 8:30 am
Leave at: 9:00 am

Safeway
904 W. Main Street
Battle Ground, Washington, 98604

Scenic cruise in the state of Washington searching for fall colors in the forest. This cruise is pavement and forest service roads, all wranglers stock and or modified are welcome.

A Washington “Discover Pass” and “NW Forest Pass” is “required” where posted. I recommended that you have them in case we enter areas that they are required to have. (Both Passes are sold at the Chelatchie Prairie General Store)

Have a full tank of fuel, and bring water, food, snacks, money, camera, and dress for the changing weather conditions we may encounter.

Meet at the Battle Ground Safeway at 0830 hrs and leave at 0900 hrs. The Fall Colors Cruise route is to drive from Battle Ground north to the Chelatchie Prairie General Store. From there we will drive east on forest service roads to Stabler/Carson areas and then back west to Sun Set Falls. 60 mile to 80 mile loop.

Welcome and congrats on your new toy! We typically meet once a month, I think it is the second Sunday of the month. N2jeepn can post the details, I think we are meeting tomorrow. There are regularly posted runs on this site, I typically post a run here and there too- however I have been long overdue. I'll have to change that soon enough-

Anyhow, just stay tuned and we can show you a time or two with your rig!

take care
