Good to know. I think that 820.1 was a mileage count. Thats about how many miles ago I bought the Jeep so that would make sense.

valgerth Yeah I drive an '06 Rubi, and the gas cap turning on the check engine is drives me crazy. If your Jeep is like mine, it'll randomly come on for a day or two(especially after you just filled up) and then go off.

jricher82 Never seen 820.1 come up as a code but if it's gone, that's good. Just keep an eye out for it again but it sounds like it was one of those "one time things" or a "phantom code". Shouldn't be anything to worry about.

jricher82 Too bad you can't get the code off your digital odometer. I'd take it to Autozone and get a free scan. They'll get the code for you, tell you what it is and reset it if you want (to see if the code gets thrown again or if it was just a phantom code) Sometimes a small misfire or a one time problem will cause the light to come on, the computer retains the code but the problem may not still be present. Just get the code read, find out what it is and go from there. A steady light isn't a huge deal, it could even be a loose or unseated gas cap. As long as the light isn't blinking, you're in good shape. Get it read, find out what it is and reset the computer to see if the code comes back up. Good luck.

You can pull the codes using the key trick (they will display in the odometer) but it won't work if your Jeep is 98, 99 or 2000 model

SeVeReDiStOrTiOn Like cbush said, if it's running good and not flashing it's probably emissions related.

Auto parts stores use to scan the codes for you but I dunno if they still do. Autozone used some handheld to check my charging system a while back after I arced off the alternator. If they have that i'm sure they have a scanner.

jkp does your jeep have an electronic odometer? if so, the codes are displayed there.
05-04-2013 10:07 PM
Melvin Didn't flash at all.

cbush1885 evap leak, or o2 sensor is probably the most common, in any case if the light is on it should be something to worry about and should be fixed.

thanks to nicolas-eric from...

here´s a manual how you can find out what´s wrong with your jeep.
read out the error code and you will know what´s wrong:

1) Turn the ignition key ON THREE TIMES in succession:
ON : OFF : ON : OFF : ON
(within FIVE seconds)

2) Count the number of times the check engine lamp on the dash flashes. The number of flashes represents the error code. There will be a short pause between the flashes representing the different digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual trouble codes.

Just got a check engine light. What are common causes? Should I be worried? It still seems to run fine.
