Sounds like drive shaft joints, twisting in one direction when in reverse, then twisting in the other direction going forward.
How hard the pop would depend on how hard you press the stupid pedal. Lol

Try this, park it in neutral on a smooth flat surface. Hand turn the rear left tire backward and forward- the Jeep only needs to move back and forth and inch or two. Watch the pinion angle very carefully. If you see the drive shaft/pinion move up and down at ALL (might only move a few millimeters) then the problem is either a loose control arm bolt or a worn bushing.
I had this happen last week on a 3 month old lift. Turned out a couple of the control arm bolts had loosened. Tightened them up and no more clunk. Suspension is quiet again. Good luck!

|KingTJ||I've been more attentive to it the last few days and notice that it doesn't happen everytime. It's only when I'm quick on the gas.. If I allow it to roll and build tension and THEN gas, it doesn't pop or clunk at all. I'm going to look into u joints, control arm bushings, and my sway bar before dropping the diff cover. Hoping its one of those things!!|

|BrandonsJeep||mine had the terrible problem of a chipped ring gear... hte popping noise was the chipped off piece clanking around and screwing up the whole ring and pinion in the rear diff...);|

If that isn't it, then start checking for loose/worn u-joints, pull the diff cover to check gears, etc.

To address the second 'pop noise' I had the same thing but it was when I was turning left. Took it to the mechanic for a service (I had just bought it) and he told me the rear sway bar was a little loose. Tightened it and good to go.

|KingTJ||What within the diff was wrong? I've seen a lot of people talk about how bad u joints can cause the same sound. Basically because when in the forward position the driveshaft is under tension and when switched to the reverse position the tension is released and the bad u joint experiences play and causes the pop or clunk. I'm not opposed to it being a problem within the diff but 1. I'd like to know what exactly was wrong with yours and 2. I'd like to find out how to mark other possible things off the list before ripping into the diff.|

|BrandonsJeep||ohhhh man.... i just had this happen to mine, if you dont change it soon youll be a FWD jeeper.. its the rear diff, atleast it was in mine.. it wouldnt hurt to get it checked out before everything is screwed up!|

Rear "POP" please help!
I own a 2000 auto with the dana 35 3.07 rear end. For a few months I've noticed a pop/clunk from the rear end after coming out of reverse and gassing. Not long ago had my pinion bearings replaced and while they had it apart they replaced inner and outer axle bearings and seals as well. Assumed that if there was something in the axles or diff causing the sound they would spot it but they told me everything besides the pinion bearings looked great. My question is, where do I begin to try and narrow the pop down? Ive also got a popping sound from the rear when making right hand turns. Don't believe it makes any sound turning left. Any advise would be appreciated.
