|jeremyx28||I never took the latch apart, but I figured it out. Once I took the cover off I realized the locking mechanism wasn't working. It was stuck in the locked position. Thank you all who helped.|

Question for you
Please do not take this the wrong way but did you put the latch back together properly?
It sounds like the pin in your latch is either loose or not installed correctly when you open the latch the mechanism should actuate if it is not then you will get this stuck closed latch issue I would pull the tailgate latch assembly apart and put a little lithium grease on the pins so they slide smoothly.
Also take a picture of the latch so we can see how it looks.
Again not trying to be a jerk about this at all.

I'm having a tough time here. When you say pull them open, you mean pull them towards the front of the vehicle? They won't budge. I can push them I'm, but they won't pull open.

|reno92||Mine would do this when the tire pulled the gate down a bit. I would shut the gate and it would bang back, I then had to lift up on the door handle while pulling up on the upper finger and down on the lower. Once they are open make sure the latch opening lines up with the tub bar, I sometimes have to pull the gate up while open with both hands to bend the tailgate hinge.|

|tbloid||Use a screwdriver, or anything that will go between them, to pull open (act as the pin that they normally latch to). Then open the door handle, like you are trying to open the tailgate and pull the fingers open with the handle open.|

|jeremyx28||They are closed together. I just need to push them in? Then they'll lock open?|

|tbloid||Is the latch lined up correctly? If it is, it may be that the catch closed. If that is the case, use a screw driver to act as the pin on the tub. Then pull the catch open while using the handle. Like you are trying to open the tailgate. Its easy to tell if the catch is closed. The fingers should be open and ready to grab the pin, not closed together.|

|jeremyx28||Latch is moving freely, I only removed the hinges, nothing else. And like I said in op, no issues prior to removing.|

So I'm about ready to snap and lose my mind. I have a 95 yj and I removed the tailgate to do a little rust control. Well I can't get the damn thing back on to save my life. The latch seems to not be opening enough to allow the catch to slide thru. I may as well be banging the door against a brick cause that's what its like. I had no opening or closing issues before removing the tailgate. I bolted up the hinges, went to close it and just bang bang bang....won't close. I loosened the bolts and tried closing it and still just bangs against the catch. I then removed the tailgate and tried getting the latch to slide over and nothing.....like I said, I'm to the point that I'm so frustrated I just had to stop for the night....any tips? I'm at a loss
