I sell Wix filters all day long and never had a failure. I run Wix filters on all my vehicles, motorcycles included.
I'm pretty sure the Napa silver and your carquest filters are lower end stuff made in China for Wix. Wix produces filters in China to sell under other brand names at low prices. You get what you pay for.
Maybe you should stay clear of CARQUEST.

A WARNING TO ALL!!!!!! Just had catastrophic engine failure from a Wix filter. My engine had less than 31K and the filter pushed apart after 702 miles driving down I-77 in West Virginia at 3am. In house testing at my shop showed the bead on the outer can failed trashing my engine in my Dodge 1500 in less than 3 miles after failure. Although still able to idle the engine I have a video of the part installed 20 min after the incident after pouring in another 5 quarts of oil to see where the leak was. Wix denies the filter was bad but also confirms the filter was installed correctly. The part number was an 85085 blue Carquest filter made by Wix in Gastonia NC. I write this because the Wix filter that fits on my Dodge 1500 is the EXACT filter for the 4.0 engine in the Jeep and my Comanche. I tested several others and found deficiencies in a few as well. Until Wix finds a cure I would stay clear of Wix filters that cross to this part number.

Being a Preferred Customer gives me a price advantage on Amsoil products, to the point that I can get my synthetic motor oil cheaper than I can get the Penzoil that my wife demands for her Jeep.
No, I'm not going to try and talk anyone out of using whatever oil they prefer, other than to suggest a quality, name-brand oil. If someone insists I use a different product, then they need to start buying it for me.

And BTW, I have never sludged an engine even after running numerous vehicles over 200k each.

While I won't "blast" our 45 yr automotive veteran for his comments concerning synthetic being a waste of money, I will politely disagree. Synthetics have a long history of being more stable, less likely to sludge, and providing greater lubricity than natural feed stock oils. Synthetics also have the ability to take more shear loading (read: abuse) than natural oils.
Having said that, I will agree if you religiously change oil and filter every 3K, regular oils will do just fine.
Me, I'm not that good and will admit that I have pushed my oil changes out a bit. I ask a lot of my jeep both in terms of off road reliability as well as long road trips across the state. A little extra protection is worth it to me...

I use Quaker state 10w30 and an OEM filter every 3k, 120k and going Strong. No need for anything else. Synthetic is a waste of money. Just change it on a regular basis.
I am sure the synthetic believers will blast me but having been in the automotive business for over 45 years doing the same oil changes on many many vehicles you will not ever change my routine. Old timers are just stubborn.
Cean oil in an engine makes the engine happy to serve you, let it get dirty and it will let you down.

The FSM says
100° temps and lower = 5w30 (preferred)
0° temps and higher = 10w30
I never see freezing temps so I run 10w30.

I use whatever is on sale as far as oil goes. I do however use full synthetic, I don't know how much of a difference it makes but it makes me feel better. I try and stick with Valvoline, Mobil 1, or Pennzoil synthetic if I can.
As for a filter I use either a Mopar, wix, purlator pur one, or whatever other quality filter they have on sale. I try and stay away from Fram, no personal experience but have heard/read many horror stories.
Your going to get as many opinions as there are oil brands so my advice would be to just pick a reputable brand and don't think to much about it.
I have read however that it might not be a good idea to use synthetic in a higher mileage car that has had conventional oil used in it most of it's life. I guess the reason being synthetic oil particles are uniform in size and can leak from small spaces that conventional oil cant. Sounds reasonable but again it's just something I've read.

I like Mobil 1, it is supposed to hold up well to extreme heat over time, and the 4.0 gets the oil pretty hot, it doesn't take long for that engine to turn fresh oil darker. Several people I know love Amsoil, they say it's as good or better than Mobil 1. I've heard you should run an oil with a higher zinc content after 75K miles on the 4.0, which is probably what the "high mileage" formulas are. I've had good luck with Wix filters, and I know some people like the Purolator PL30001 filter because it's higher capacity and has more media area, but I can't find the Wix equivalent.
I tend to advise people to stay away from Fram. Not sure about their oil filters, but their air filters are horribly restrictive.

What oil and filter
Like everything we all have our preferences so I'm curious as to what type of oil and filter you use in your TJ. Ive read everything from Rotella diesel oil to Mobil 1 full syhtnetic. THis will be the first time I change the oil on my TJ which is a 4.0 and has about 112k miles.
