MosesTJ It's an 8mm square socket. I just bought off amazon for $6. I only did it because I overheated on the trail and had dirt all in the rad. Here's what came out of the block after draining.

I don't have one of those but thanks for the tip - if they are only a few dollars I may pick one up..
I haven't felt the need to drain the coolant from the block but if I had the right tool I wouldn't be able to stop myself

Neil F. There is no need to drain the block (but you say you already filled the radiator so yes draining the block will dump the coolant you have added)

Unless the coolant in the system was very old or discolered, I'd leave it alone.

He's talking about the coolant drain plug on the block located beneath the manifold.

I've never drained the block from the plug because I can't find a tool that fits the drain plug

Standard 1/4, 1/2 and 3/8 drives don't fit.

n00g7 You may also be able to run it while replacing the water you're letting it pump out to flush everything and then pour in anti-freeze based on the overall coolant capacity. Haven't tried it that way with the jeep, but worked fine on other cars...

I have never had a problem with a block drain plug. But I seem to have far fewer problems than some folks.

Coolant change- -Drain the block or not?

I just replaced the water pump on my 98 TJ 4.0. The gasket completely broke the day before, so I was filling the radiator with distilled water to get around to NAPA and O'Reilly's. I drained the radiator of all water and filled it with 50/50 coolant, but should I also drain the block? I was told to absolutely not drain the block because the plug almost always leaks after you remove it and that it's fine to leave it. Though, one person who said that also doesn't seem to believe in preventative maintenance and I'm skeptical of most things he advises about vehicles since his are always in the shop.
I'm sure there's truth to the inevitable drain plug leak in some engines, but how has the 4.0 drain plug held up for you guys?
Should I definitely drain the block since I was cooling on water, or should I leave it alone?
Did I just waste a gallon of coolant by filling up the radiator and not draining the block?

Btw, I'm new to the forum, but I've been stalking it for about a year since I bought my wrangler and I appreciate all the help I've already gotten....haha. I always try to buy from the advertisers!
